Nathan Talks Season 5 with TV Line

Nathan sat down with TV Line this weekend at Comic Con and answered a few questions about the upcoming season of Castle. Source: ENTV

  1. I can't wait to see how they do the Beckett's mom's case. I feel the time for a resolution has come, but I also don't want it to conclude. I think this case has made Caskett stronger and continue to do so. They have so much more to lose now that they are in a relationship and can't wait to see how it will affect/progress them going forward.

They have come a long way since Castle poked his nose where it didn't belong and now he's such a part of it that he was willing to risk what he and Kate had built together in order to protect her, then later walk away than see her get killed.

I have loved this storyline for so long, but want to see Kate & Rick finally catch the sons of bitches who killed her mother... together. I'll never forget thay end scene in Sucker Punch and I hope Marlowe hasn't, either.

I know some fans want all fun and games, but that will happen in time. Progress to that. It wouldn't make much sense for the premiere to have a S1 and S2 tone after the amazing Always, which shows much more depth to the relationship than the earlier seasons did.

I prefer seasons 3 and 4 and hope Marlowe continues to throw the fun in along with the intense and dark moments. I feel the characters grow more from episodes that push the envelope than those where we're laughing all the time. This is a DRAMEDY and not The Big Bang Theory.

This interview with Nathan gives me hope that Marlowe will continue to balance the fun and angst as he's done for 4 seasons.

The characters have grown and developed so much since seasons 1 and 2, to expect them to regress isn't the best option.

Castle's regression after 47 Seconds was to show him that his old behavior was not going to make him happy and he's fallen for a challenging, yet extraordinary woman warts and all and to show Kate that she's come to love and appreciate the man that crept into her heart unexpectedly and that she couldn't bear losing him warts and all.

Yeah. This show, Marlowe, and cast/characters rock!

    1. I have to agree with you on quite a few of your points, I mean:
      a) it can't be all sunshine, daisies and rainbows cause then they wouldn't be able to reign it in for the more serious ones likes Johanna's murder.
      b) I hope to Marlowe that the moment we come to the part when "The Dragon" finally comes to his/her end, whenever that may be, that he's at the mercy of Beckett and she makes the final decision to spare them, it'd be a tad poetic, giving her final say like he had over her mother and yet showing that she's the better person. Otherwise I hope like sucker punch that it's a save Castle situation and she shoots him in the head.
I half agree to the fact that the more dramatic seasons were better, my personal favourite is 4, but I have missed season 2's fun a whole lot.

    2. Anon 12:21 here again. Good post. I was rewatching season 4 and found myself cracking up a whole lot during it. Season 2's fun hasn't left the show for me. I think some fans are refering to the Caskett banter of that season, but it wasn't real because neither was admitting to the feelings and were so in denial, so they kept it light as to not discuss what was really going on.

On other aspects of the show, the humor and banter amongst the entire cast is still there and Caskett were tiptoeing around what had become so very real for them, but they settled into a comfortableness that I really felt brought them closer in the end.

I don't have many complaints about the fun and the angst because for me it's been there since S1 with a good mixture. If you rewatch S1, we had a serious tone to it but I think many were so focused on the wtwt they didn't pay attention to the mystery that was being set up with Beckett's mom's case in seasons 1 and 2. We got hints that there was more to Beckett being emotionally distant than her attraction to Castle that she was fighting.

I have rewatched this series from beginning to up to this point too many times and I come out with the same conclusion... that AM has grown and developed the characters a great deal and everything falls into place the way I felt the storytelling was setting it up to be.

Then again, I am a fan who loves everything about the show and not just the amazing wtwt ship of Caskett. I love each character as they are, together and apart and that includes more than just Castle & Beckett, and hope that AM continues to bring the goodies. I am hooked! This is my fav show on tv!!

    3. Mine too! You and nikola brought out great points. I think it would be very poetic for Kate to decide if they live or not but I think she'll let them live because she wants them to suffer. I think the senator is behind it and it would be cool if she saved Rick again. I also would like to see the senator and vice president arrested in the same alley where it all began. I think that maybe in the premiere they will find out those 2 are behind the murder but need more evidence to arrest them. Also would like to see Kate honor her mom by the fundraiser. They really chose a great cast. And I love all the characters. I think the premiere might be better than always and I can't wait to see it. I don't care If there is angst in season 5. It is a dramedy and I love both angst and fluff. I really think that season 5 will be a great season and I can't wait to see all the opportunities and challenges, we get to see our characters go through. As for his dad, I don't think he is connected to joahnna's murder. I think AM said it would be it's own storyline they use after they solve Joahnna's case.

    4. I was just thinking about how many of us feel the Senator and the Vice President are guilty (I personally think it's the Senator), but what if they are good guys? Or one of them is good, the other is bad. We should consider those possibilities.

I can see Castle reaching out to finding his father to assist him in this case. Ausiello mentioned the hiring of other high ranking officials and I wonder if he meant the Senator since he did mention just the Vice President, or will we get some other characters like in the CIA or something as well. That could be about Castle's father. I find it suspcious and just a bit convenient that Sophia saw Castle's murder board with info on it about Beckett's mom's death and then later tease him about his father being in the CIA.

If Marlowe wanted to he could use Sophia in flashbacks reaching out to Castle's father giving him an update on what Rick has been up to and we see a myserious man later being shown upset by her duplicity and wanting to make it up to the son he's never had any contact with.... or has he?

Marlowe really has opened up an avenue of directions he can take the show by not writing himself in a corner with a lot of things we've already seen. That lack of continuity some fans complain is sometimes done on purpose for writers to bring things back up later and this show does a good job of doing that.

I can't wait to see more on Caskett's relationship, Beckett and Espo's jobs with the 12th, Ryan & Espo's relationship, Alexis's internship/college and relationship with Castle now that she's leaving for school and he's dating Beckett, Martha's role in Castle's life, the Johanna Beckett case, the mystery surrounding Castle's MIA father, 3Xk, the backstory of the supporting characters, and sooo much more.

Yeah, i'm loving this show and the cast!!

    5. Great, thoughtful comments Anon 12:21, Nikola, Brit and Anon 3:05! I love your ideas. These are exactly the kind of insightful comments I look forward to reading on this site. I hope we can all do more of this. It makes the anticipation for the new season more fun. While I respect the opinions of others and their concerns (believe me, I've had my share), I want to stay positive about Season 5.

After seeing how Always exceeded my expectations and remembering how impressed I was with Rise, the season 4 premiere, I have a good feeling that we will be pleased with the Season 5 premiere and the direction that this show is taking. I have faith.

We may not like every episode to the degree that we loved Rise or Always or even Knockdown, etc, but overall we will still get so much out of this show. I absolutely can't wait! I think we are in for some killer episodes! No pun intended. Okay, yeah, pun intended.

    6. It is so refreshing to find people talking about this show in a positive light and not have to put up with all the Debbie Downers accusing Nathan of being a Debbie Downer (do you see the irony of the situation?).

I have to say I've thoroughly enjoyed the journey that Castle and Beckett went on to finally get together. They have both changed a remarkable amount from the two people who first appeared in the pilot episode, thanks to an incredibly wonderful influence they have had on each other.

Now I don't consider myself a sucker for love stories and admittedly I was initially drawn to this show because of the incredibly funny banter between the core cast, but I too have become transfixed by these two characters (Castle and Beckett) and their journey from getting on each other's nerves to not being able to handle being apart from one another.

The great thing about this show is that it is in a place right now where it can only grow stronger now that Castle and Beckett are together, instead of the wheels beginning to fall off, which is the basis for this clichéd "Moonlighting Curse" that is like a pain in the backside you can't get rid of no matter how hard you try.

Therefore I await Season 5 with a great anticipation. Andrew Marlowe has proven to be a canny operator and so far he has done a magnificent job, despite all the howls of protests that reverberated around the Castle chat sites and then went suddenly silent after Always aired (I wonder why lol).

  2. Against my better judgment, I watched this interview and actually found it to be pretty good. I didn't learn much that I didn't already know, but it was nice to see Nathan give some positive reinforcement to Castle, especially after some of the things he's said recently. It wasn't as good as if the interview had been with Stana, but still decent.

    1. Nathan was more optimistic about the Castle. I like that.
I think that's the attitude he should adopt even if you disagree with the fate of Castle and Beckett.
If he disagrees with the decision of the producers , at least have to be more respectful to everyone who works in the show.

    2. http://tvforfreaks.com/2012/07/14/entire-firefly-conmic-con-panel-2012/

I really wish some of you would watch this clip and go around the 26 minute mark where Joss Whedon describes how Nathan is the Captain of the ship and it wasn't just about Firefly for me, but him as a person on any show where he's the star of the show.

I really wish some of you would quit putting things out there that Nathan doesn't care about Castle, ABC, or his costars because it's not true.

If you are unhappy with him preferring Firefly over Castle, which is his right, then that is something you personally need to work on dealing with and getting over.

He has a right to his opinion and even if I don't agree with him I am not going to add on to how *I* feel he's being when he has not once come out and said he hates working on Castle, hates his costars, and hates the Castle fans.

Some are being very presumptuous and downright rude and disrespectful in judging Nathan and his love for Firefly.

When he discusses Castle, he seems committed in seeing it be successful and up for the challenge of making it a success.

He just did an interview where he said he would love to do 6, maybe 7 seasons of Castle.

Does that sound like someone who doesn't appreciate the success Castle, Marlowe, ABC and his costars has brought him?

      Delete
    3. Anonymous

You are in contradiction to his speech.
I must respect the opinions of Nathan should not you respect the opinions other fans?

What we have here are only opinions not final judgment.

      Opinions can change.

What I really want is that season 5 is great!

      Delete
    4. I honestly don't resect these opinions because people are mostly being judgemental and vile and making a lot of false assumptions being made about Nathan and how he feels about Castle and his costars and the network.

And again, this thread started off being about discussing the show Castle based on this interview and was about to turn into let's discuss how Nathan has been disrespecting the show and the fans and his colleagues and it's a domino effect with this fandom to begin discussing what they don't enjoy about it or Nathan or insert something else to show how people are unhappy with something about the show and its stars.

It's a vicious cycle that sadly is normal here and elsewhere with the Castle fandom.

      Delete
    5. I think what you didn't get in the Anon's post, Fan Seriados, is that Nathan's opinions are about HIS life. He has the right to have them, doesn't he? He has the right to feel what he feels about Firefly, because he lived it. You can't seriously expect that actors will take their cue from random people about what to do with their lives, can you? What you have is assumptions and projections, you have the right to make them, but being aware of your limited info is important.

  4. Ok, so here's my two cents after watching this interview. First of all, I have to say that Nathan looks very good. Let me rephrase that: very, very good. Excellent. Somehow relaxed and less tired.

That being said, I gotta say that the interview itself was also very good, even great considering that there have been other interviews with Nathan in the past that were, let's say, less positive. I think he was being honest when he said that he changed his mind about Castle and Beckett being together and that the hookup was well done by the writers. And I got the impression that he's finally over the moonlighting curse thing. Maybe he was just afraid that Castle would end up like that and get cancelled in the first place. In my opinion, his concern actually shows how much he cares about the show.

  9. OK, I've watched this particular interview a few times and I hope that it helps quash the recent discontent (especially on the older article with Molly's interview with Michael Auseillo) about Nathan and his alleged disrespecting of the Castle fans or not showing the show Castle enough love (which I think are rubbish accusations really).

I sometimes wonder if maybe Nathan's portrayal of Richard Castle flies under the radar at times or is dwarfed by the way people feel about Stana's character. For sure Stana deserves a huge amount of credit for the way she has portrayed Kate Beckett (and I think she has done a wonderful job of portraying Kate), but I think Nathan deserves that credit too. There were at least three scenes in Season 4 in particular where he really stood out. The first was in Rise, where his character gave that impassioned speech trying to tell Kate to "give it time, you'll figure it out". The second was in Kill Shot, where unable to help Kate with her PTSD he had to encourage Esposito to help her through it. Afterwards when Kate thanked Rick for giving her space he replied "always". It was great that the word "always" came out at that point, but what made it even better was the way he said it; that it genuinely came from the depths of Rick Castle's heart and not said just to keep Kate happy. The third moment was in the Finale, where after admitting his secret to her and her refusing to back away from the case, he let it all out (there were even tear's in his eyes which made Nathan's acting stand out even more in this scene). I also thought I'd mention the "I bring you a cup of coffee every morning just so I can see a smile on your face, because I think you're the most remarkable, maddening, challenging, frustrating person I've ever met" line that he delivered in this scene. Funnily enough these three moments were where his character was being serious. Nathan is known for being a funny guy and to some extent the character he portrays (especially a lot in the first three seasons of Castle) mirrors him (which makes it a lot easier for him to play the character Rick Castle I reckon.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Season 5 plays out and how Rick and Kate handle being in a relationship. They've left a lot of things open and I think that getting Rick and Kate together should in no way signal the beginning of the end of the show. In fact I believe that getting them together will in fact cause this show to grow even stronger and that hopefully means that Season 5 will continue the upward trend (ratings wise) that this show has been going at since it started.

    1. I agree, I think the show doesn't give NF that many opportunities to show his chops, compared to Stana. And some people take it as if it's his fault and not the character or script being written in a certain way. But when he is allowed he knocks it out of the park IMHO.

Sure it's difficult to write Castle character in a way that would let Nathan stretch those acting muscles, but I think they have to try anyway. I mean, if people are saying that he's bored with Castle (not saying it's true), than may be the responsibility is not only on him, but on the show too? Give both of your leads something to work on, it will make the show better and healthier.

      Delete
    2. OR those fans are taking their own discontent with the show out on Nathan. He doesn't look bored to me and has had opportunities to stretch his acting chops throughout the series, too. Beckett is the straight character, so she's bound to be more serious than Castle. He's the funny guy, so when we see him more serious it gives more of an impact, which balances well with Beckett's character who has loosened up the more time she spends with Castle.

I think this fandom is one of the hardest to please i've ever seen and i've been around some disgruntled fandoms. This show and its creator and character/stars are constantly criticized by "the fans" and it's hard to find an avenue to discuss the show with constructive criticism and appreciation.

Btw, I don't mean you, just that I have also seen the Nathan is bored with Castle comments and I don't see it on my screen, but then again I enjoy 95% of what I have seen. The other 5% I don't enjoy still is entertaining, just something I feel Marlowe has already begun to rectify.

      Delete
    3. Or when Nathan showed his chops again in knockout when Rick told Kate I love you. You could really feel the emotion and truth behind it. Or in that one ep, I forgot the name of it, but when his old college friend was suspected of murder, Nathan played that emotional scene well. Both actors did. And I loved how we got to see vulnerable Rick and Kate was protective of him and had his back. I love this show because it challenges it character and we get to see them in different ways. The actors always do a great job. Nathan has been getting bashed at his firefly panel, but it's not because those fans hate or dislike him. We were already upset that Castle wasn't going to comic Con this year And that firefly was because we wanted to find out more about season 5 and watch our sneak peek. So fans got upset when he didn't answer that girl's question about always or season 5. I wanted to know too, but it was a firefly panel and that is what he should've been talking about. Ya some fans might disagree with what an actor says and start bashing them but that doesn't mean they hate them. Take molly Quinn for example. People hated that she said Alexis was just going to see Kate as another girlfriend. They and me couldn't think of why Alexis would see her as this if there was evidence proving that Kate can't just be another one. Like in rise, rick and Alexis had that talk about Kate if she made him happy or not. Which proved Rick had feelings for Kate more than he does so for any other woman in the past or present. However, Alexis has seen many of his father's girlfriends leave at a certain point and her dad's relationships not work out. She probably will think Kate is just another one as a coping mechanism, so she doesn't get attached. Her mom left, Gina left, she figures Kate is going to. Even if the season starts out like this, Alexis will soon realize Kate isn't leaving anytime soon. Anyway back on subject, this fandom is both frustrating and awesome.(that's right, I said it) But they are more awesome than frustrating.Ya they bash some characters or actors, who hasn't. It is still going to happen in the future, but hopefully it doesnt take up a whole board. I respect all their opinions and hey castle fans are awesome. That's all there us to it. They have good times and bad times but so does every fandom, nothing to get upset about. . Point being, I look forward to season 5 and seeing the actors portraying our characters. Hopefully we all stay positive because we have nothing to be negative about. Caskett just got together.

    4. Anon 3.15 AM here again. Anon 3.52 AM, I think it's fair to say that the first four seasons of Castle have mostly focussed on the back story of Kate Beckett and her mother's murder, despite the fact that Richard Castle is the main character. It was necessary for them to do this because of the way they've portrayed Kate as someone almost like a "lost" spirit, haunted by the death of her mother, who needed someone to guide her back to where she should be, and that person is Rick Castle. I think once the people behind the conspiracy that was born from the death of Bobby Armen and has led to the deaths of many people (including Johanna Beckett) are caught, we will see things shift towards uncovering who Rick's father really is. I think it's great that four seasons in and we've got the two leads together and still have so many avenues to explore. Hopefully this means this show won't be slowing down any time soon!

Hey Brit, I believe the episode with Rick's old College buddy is called "The Final Nail". I agree with what you say about the fandom. I think we need to be careful not to generalize everyone when talking about the fandom though. While I've seen or directly encountered people who were "unhappy" with what they perceived as Andrew Marlowe deliberately avoiding getting Caskett together and therefore ruining the show (well, this all happened before "Always"), I've had many great conversations with people who love sharing their wonderful theories about this show and its characters. I have to admit that it gives me a bit of a buzz to get involved in conversations with people who want to share their wonderful theories. I think in general the people who aren't happy are considered to be in the minority, but they are also the ones who voice their opinions the loudest, hence why some of the discussion posts (Heartbreak Hotel, Pandora, Linchpin and The Limey) are flooded with people unhappy with the current situation, giving the impression that the fans all hate the show, which we all know isn't true.

However, I do think some of the comments made about the actors are downright rude. For example, in the other Auseillo interview at Comic Con with Molly Quinn, I've read quite a few people accusing Molly of having no idea about how her character should act/think. As far as I'm concerned there's absolutely nothing constructive about comments like that and it's a shame that people stoop to those sorts of lows. I guess the best thing to do is ignore these sort of people and focus instead on people who want to discuss their wonderful theories on where the characters should head from this point!

      Delete
    5. You make great points 3:15 and 12:11. :). You are right. Some of them are low like when they call Nathan fat. But it's best to just ignore them. Thank you for the ep title. Totally had a brain fart thinking about the name, lol. I do miss reading people's theories and putting down my own. It gets me excited too! I loved it when everybody made their wishlists for season 5. All of the wishlists were great and I would love to see many people's ideas on the show. Like many people talk about rick's dad and him in the CIA. I would like to see somebody pose as rick's dad, so we can see how Rick and Kate handle that and we can see Kate being there for him. Of course that person might just pose as his dad just to get money from him, which would be sad but a great storyline I personally think. As I said we can see Kate be there for Rick and Alexis, Martha, and himself can see how protective Kate is over him. Which we saw in cops and robbers when that guy threatened to shoot Rick. Also it wasn't really to protect Rick in this ep but in headhunters I loved what she said to the head gang member. It just clearly states do not mess with Kate Beckett. She will not take crap from anyone, especially when it has to do with the people she loves. I would also like to see an ep where we can see Kate's maternal side being brought out, by Alexis.

    6. @Brit
but there's a difference between arguing or even hating on plot twists or storylines, and bashing the actual actors. You kinda make it sound like it's all the same and OK overall. But the difference is we, fans, have the right to judge the show, argue and disagree about it, because it was made FOR US to do just that. We have full information about it, sure we all have different takes on it, but it's still laid out there for us to discuss. And the thing with actors - we don't have ANY information (however well we might think we know them) and nobody grants us the right to make assumptions, jump to conclusions and judge.

I think it's a very important difference. So however frustrating might be hearing things about the show you don't agree with, sometimes stupid and pointless and whatever, it is still OK in my book. It's fandom. But as soon as fans start applying the same logic to actual people, making the show, it stops being OK and starts being creepy, rude and delusional. It's not fandom, it's serpentarium. That's how I see it.

      Delete
    7. Srry anon 1:47. I know it's not the same but I'm just saying hating on storylines might lead them to bash the actor. I don't think it's right. The actors personal life is theirs and we can't judge them or criticize them. I get what you are saying that we can do it for the character and not for the person playing the character even if we do disagree with them on something. I don't like when people bash the actors and I'm sorry for making it seem Ok to do so. It wasn't my intention. I just wanted to clarify and share my thoughts. I think we should all just focus on the characters since that is the reason we watch the show
