GMMR: Andrew Marlowe Teases ‘Always’

It’s a little crazy to believe, but we’re a little over a day away from the CASTLE season finale. (Where the heck has time gone?!) And let’s be honest…if you’re a CASTLE fan, you may be losing your mind just a teeny tiny bit thanks to the spoilerific promos ABC has released.

So, I’m here to (hopefully) make the wait for “Always” a little bit easier.

Last time I spoke with CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe, he dropped a ton of finale teases just days before they actually shot the episode. But you guys wouldn’t object to a few more hints from a conversation I had with him late last week, right?

Keep reading for Marlowe’s take on what’s been revealed via promos, partnership angst, and a very vague tease about Tahmoh Penikett’s character…

I know you’re on Twitter, but I don’t know if you’ve seen how much CASTLE has broken social media in the past couple of days…

Andrew Marlowe: [Laughs] Those promos, huh? Leave it to the ABC promo department to be subtle. [Laughs again] It’s been something to watch. And it’s been something to watch when you have no control over it and you just have to go to your zen place.

Is that something that has been bothering you?

AM: As a storyteller it does, but from a promo point of view, I certainly understand their desire to get the fanbase talking and really excited. And I think they certainly achieved that. And the nice thing is the stuff they’ve shown isn’t all in context and there’s still a lot of surprises, even with the clips the audience has seen. When they’re in a different context, I think it’s going to be very interesting and surprising. So yeah, as a storyteller it bothers me to have all that stuff out there, but as a marketer, I understand their decision to do it.

  2. Yea, that interview was really helpful /sarc

Well, to be fair, a book large enough to rival Heat Wave has been written about this week's episode, so really wasn't expecting much in the way of anything new by that interview. Entertaining, but not informative...

24 hours until the midnight of the summer silence, then the dawn with the fall for season 5. I can live with that.

    1. It took me a minute to get what you mean about a book on Always rivaling Heat Wave, but you're right! We've been seeing spoiler articles for Always since 47 Seconds. The thing is, they pretty much all say the same thing- cards on the table, relationships put to the test, a new chapter, yadda yadda. This article was a bit different though. I clicked the link and read the whole thing, and while I didn't learn anything I didn't already know it's nice to hear Marlowe's take on things, especially the marketing. I'm really curious to see how Always will turn out because he mentioned that the promos and the sneak peeks are out of context. The article also mentioned that there was more to the interview, but it won't be posted until after Always has aired. It seems that Marlowe said something too spoilery to publish before we see the episode!

  3. Really everything was out of context?? I expect more surprises for sure, they wont be showing us the full deck of cards.... I just hope they dont tear C&B apart with the pretext of betrayal. These characters should not be kept separated much longer. Its really not believeable beyond this point!

    1. Castle and Beckett will not be torn apart once they're together. Marlowe has said this a million times, and yet, some still don't hear him. Maybe that's also why he feels the need to keep repeating his "cards on the table phrase." Regardless, this whole story arc has been about ripping Caskett apart, and as a result, it's going to be even more gratifying when they get together (presumably in Always). Marlowe did not put our favorite couple through 5 episodes of heartbreak only to rip them apart again.

    2. I don't expect to know all the cards in play on Always until all the hands has been dealt for the night's episode. What I am expecting is a few wild cards (Alexis and Martha) alongside a full house of surprises (the Ryan and Esposito hints of problems coming, maybe even Lanie and Gates with some interesting story arcs, although nothing really has been hinted about them in the spoilers), two aces (secrets) coming out of the sleeves and hitting the table, and definitely a royal flush of every plausible, imaginable emotion Beckett and Castle have both for each other and in response to each other's secrets as well as the Johanna Beckett Quest for Justice.

As to Beckett and Castle being torn apart, I expect they will be when they have to confront the secrets. They're going to be shredded over it, frankly, and they both will have the same big question to answer: Is Castle's/Beckett's love and capacity to understand and forgive their partner stronger than the pain that the same partner inflicted upon him/her because of his/her secret and perceived betrayal?

My guess (and hope, spurred on by the reams of interviews and articles about the finale) is the love will be stronger and Castle and Beckett will be first ripped apart, then put back together with a stronger bond and as a couple from Always forward. I am very much hoping that my hope is validated Monday night. :-)

      Monday, Monday...

    3. At least we know that Rick tells Kate his secret to her face rather than her discovering his murder board when finally confronting him about her feelings for him or something like that lol.

I do feel a bit sorry for Andrew Marlowe. It is a bit predictable that all hell will break loose in the finale, (I do think that those who wanted to see things spread out a lot more have a point but there's no drama in that lol), but it is shaping up to be potentially the greatest episode they've ever created. The ABC and CTV promos have been offering up some juicy clips of the finale, possibly giving away a bit more than what Andrew Marlowe would've wanted. At the end of the day though money screams the loudest and the two broadcasting channels want to get as many people as possible viewing the finale and have thought to themselves that the best way to do this is to give us some very juicy clips!

Remember in Knockout Caskett were also torn apart for a while during that episode, after Rick tried to (unsuccessfully) talk Kate into walking away from chasing Hal Lockwood. During Montgomery's final scene Kate reached up and touched Rick on the side of his face and even called him Rick (which she very rarely does). In the following scene she acknowledged him as part of their "family", along with Esposito and Ryan, where they made a pact of sorts to prevent the world from discovering that it was Roy Montgomery that really killed Bob Armen (unintentionally and in a struggle with the FBI Agent) and not Joe Pulgatti.

Given the noises recently it sounds like this finale and the opening episode of Season 5 are connected in a bigger way than Knockout and Rise were. So effectively this finale is the first part in a two-part event. Not long to go now people!

  4. I really feel for Andrew and Terri with all the sneak peeks and the US/Canadian promo war going on. I'm not strong enough to stay away from spoilers, BUT not once has the aired episodes failed to pleasantly surprise me. The spoilers never truly spoil their work. As "Always", can't wait to fall in love with Kate and Rick yet again with tomorrow's season ender.

    1. The spoilers never ruin the episode for me either, mainly because I like watching them and coming here to discuss them with everybody. I love to speculate and read other people's opinions and theories about the show. For me, the sneak peeks and spoilers actually add layers to my Castle experience.

  5. Obviously they were out of context. That one spoiler left out a good bit of dialogue which was obvious by the cut off, but dammit if that kiss isn't real I'm gonna be pissed. >.< errr so yes it best be real and heart felt and there better not be any other thing to it except to lead them into bed with one another haha. I'm just a tad bit obsessed.

  8. Putting all the cards on the table, is Andrew Marlowe's very favorite phrase. Haha. He has honestly said it in every interview I've read. Not that I mind. I'm all up for all of the cards getting put on the table tomorrow night!! 23 hours and 20 minutes longer... I'll be counting down the hours, minutes, and seconds all day tomorrow. I don't know if I can wait this one last day. The suspense is KILLING ME!!!!

  9. I can see what AM is getting at with regard to being "bothered as a storyteller". I assume what is going to happen is that Castle and Beckett have their confrontation over his secret. He asks her not to, but she goes after her shooter anyway. So the cards are on the table but the viewer does not know which way they fall, in other words we don't know whether Beckett will come back to Castle even if she lives. But actually we have already seen her return and the kiss... This kind of undercuts the storytelling tension.

    1. True enough. I suppose it could be that the ABC PR gang had caught some angst and maybe even anger on the slowness of the Caskett shipping lines and decided to put out plenty of spoilers pointing toward the kiss and hints of more coming to placate and settle the fans who are demanding the union take place without any more delays. With a title like Always, and its significance in the show, I guess they decided "go ahead" with some of the more revealing spoilers since the fans would figure it out anyway?

It is now Monday where I live... 17 hours and I'll see the final credits roll for the season. :-) Tick... tock... tick... tock... are there any Castle/Beckett clocks for sale? There's an idea! A Castle cuckoo clock! LOL

do we know what'll happen in this finale? Do spoilers, promos, sneak peeks tell us enough about these two main facts?Relationship between Espo & Ryan turning bad - Relationship between Beckett & Castle turning good.

Does Marlow always tell us about cards on the table and so on just because all these promos are annoying him??

    1. That's typical of a site/paper with nothing new to add, no new info and certainly no inside sources - and what they want to do is cash in on all the chatter. Basically, they want page hits.

Something like that is more bloggish, barely even an op-ed, let alone an article of merit.

Don't let it get to you. If they had any scoop they wouldn't have left it till now to capitalize on.

  15. That "journalist" simply made a list of shows and couples that have nothing to do with Castle and Caskett, he doesn't even say he watched the episode, just that getting the leads together didn't work for other shows (don't get me started on the Moonlighting curse!).
IMO he had no news on Castle and simply went for drama with that title...

    ReplyDelete

    1. That is about what I thought of the article, too. Moonlighting had a lot of problems beyond the on-screen events. I won't go into it here (the list is too long for that and since you didn't want to get started with it, I will refrain from saying much about it, also), but Moonlighting, along with Remington Steele had major off-screen, behind-the-camera issues that played a part in their demises. In Remington's case, I will say that the chemistry of the leads was fair, but forced, and it was especially noticeable in the later episodes,

Castle does not have the same chemistry problem. These two leads have a great dynamic as characters, enhanced by the great dynamic of the actors to play the roles.

Beyond that, yea, just a headline-grabbing column to fill space on the page and to meet a deadline, I'm guessing. Seriously, New Girl gets mentioned, but Remington Steele, a far more relevant show to the will-they, won't-they question, doesn't? Nothing against New Girl, but seriously?

Tick,,, tock... goes the Castle clock... the minutes run... here comes the fun... :)

  16. this article gets me worried because, it almost says that everything we have gotten in the promos is what is ging to happen in the episode. i mean not in the context there is still prob so much more story before and after each of the sneak peeks. but before reading this article i thought that the kiss was not giong to be the cliffhanger because they would have given it away already in the promos, but now im not so sure?!?

  19. A fun article actually. Put all of the various conversations of Marlowe's together and you do get the odd new tidbit along with all the comments and phrasings we've all heard before.

I completely get the conflict he must have as showrunner to write and craft the show and want people to watch it as it unfolds, but also understanding and wanting the network to support and promote it. It must cause some anxiety to finish an ep and then just turn it over to ABC and let them do with it what they will.

Honestly, though, I thought that some of the ABC & CTV compilation promos, along with Ausiello comments about swings, were far more spoilerish than some of the sneak peeks.

The sneak peeks everyone knows are snippets taken out of context and will be colored by what they're surrounded by - and yes the compilations too - but I just think the compilations gave more away in terms of hinting at the direction the resolution of some issues takes.

We always knew the secrets were gonna come out in the finale and we knew that the Joanna Beckett murder was gonna be revisited, and so I didn't find the sneak peeks surprised me with as much as the other promos.

That's why I found the the compilations more spoilerish because they seem to answer some questions instead of further tease them (Beckett rain soaked and reaching for Rick, let alone the kiss), and Ausiello swings comment. Those are hings I might rather have found out in the ep. The resignation as well, but that's a rare new question in the mix.

Not to mention the ABC epic romance fan-vid - if THAT didn't telegraph a major shift coming up for the show and the central relationship, then I dunno WHAT would.

As for Nathan's NYC promo tour, may I just say he was charming & hilarious as always and that nd he was looking AMAZING on all the appearances/shows.

Ah well. My misgivings are my own damned fault as I can't stay away from spoilers and promos though, lol. Castle seems to have become a rarified teevee addiction that must needs be fed. I feel like I need a 12 step program, lol.

And Marlowe's right in that none of it will stop people from watching the episode, lol. "What's everyone been talking about?" his twitter account asks? You're too funny, Marlowe. Talk about frustrating and remarkable, lol.

I like that Marlowe seems to twinkle his bemused humor and good grace through it all - how many opportunities do you get to have some pithy revelation made while one of your leads is in zombie make-up, indeed, heh.

I fully expect there will be some twists and surprises remaining though, given all the talk from the whole cast about how emotionally & physically explosive it is, even if we already know there's gonna be some dessert once the table & cards have been cleared. I'll eat every nugget of angst for that dessert, I'll tell ya, lol.

I think Espo/Ryan are part of it team-wise, I wonder if Gates may start to figure more prominently as well, and I think a large part of the cliff hanger will also be setting up more case-specific progress for S5's other half.

I think this part of the cliff-hanger will really be about Kate and her journey.

How's she's defined herself by the murder and her career. Castle's a partner and also an antidote to her over-focus because he exists both inside and outside of that bubble, he's her link to a larger life. I think walking away from the NYPD both lets Beckett go rogue but also find out who she is without her badge. I think a large part of the emotional quotient is her choosing dessert with Castle rather than cupcakes in NY.

Soon, so soon. Just gotta get thru the day and then burrow into my sofa with the remote so no one changes the channel. They know better, but hey. Better safe than sorry, right?

Oh Marlowe. I'm tempted to send you a box of cupcakes now.

    1. Well said Anon 9.34 AM. Just to elaborate on what you talked about in regards to Kate's journey, in the sixth sneak peek, the one where Rick reveals his secret to her, she, in a highly emotional moment basically asks him why did he steer her away from the "most important thing in her life?" (her mother's murder case). I think we'll see by the end of the episode that Kate will realize that her mother's murder, which has defined her for so long, is no longer the most important thing in her life, Rick is.

It must be difficult as a show creator, when the network goes and reveals more stuff than you want them to, in order to spike the anticipation and interest in the show. Given what they've showed us (don't read this "speculative" bit if you don't want to), it seems fairly certain that Rick goes to Kate's apartment after getting a call from Mr Smith to try and stop her from investigating this case any further. He reveals his secret and that leads to an argument which pulls them apart. Rick goes home feeling like an emotional train-wreck and Kate somehow ends up sitting on the swing-set used in Rise and also apparently gets caught in a torrential downpour. At this point her love for Rick swells in her enough to destroy the anger she has because of what he was doing. She races over to his loft and that's when the fun begins!

I have absolutely no idea what the cliffhanger will be and I'm fairly certain that not that many people will see it coming! Not long now people!
