TVLine: Castle Boss Says What Comes Next Is Tough, 'But It'll Be Fun Tough'

On Monday night in the Season 4 finale of Castle, all secrets were shared and all cards were put out on the table, as promised. But where did it all lead?

Working the murder of an Army vet, Beckett & Co. came to discover through DNA evidence that the shooter was the same guy who put a bullet in Kate’s heart a year ago — and thus he figures into the larger, deadly conspiracy surrounding Johanna Beckett’s years-ago killing.

But for Kate to rattle that hornet’s nest again would certainly lead to her own demise — a fact that Rick has known but kept to himself. And in the finale, he made clear to Kate exactly why she needed to back away from this case.

Beckett was less than understanding. “I didn’t need protection; I needed a lead, and you sat on it for a year…. How the hell could you do this?!”

“Because I love you. But you already know that, don’t you,” Rick said, alluding to his Season 3 finale declaration which Kate has pretended to not remember.

They agreed to disagree, and Kate stayed on the case while Rick disclosed his intention to exit stage left, once and for all. But after a brutal rooftop throwdown with the shooter (played by Battlestar Galactica alum Tahmoh Penikett) — and backlash from Capt. Gates which led Beckett to not just turn in her badge, as Esposito did, but tender her resignation — a rain-soaked Kate showed up at Rick’s door to say three words again and again: “I’m so sorry.”

“He got away, and I didn’t care,” she explained. “I almost died, and all I could think about was you. I just want you.”

  2. The Finale was absolut great but the teases begin right now.I really hope they don't regret that they slept together of course it will not be easy but it sounds like they are not really a couple and there are a lot more Obstacles.AM talk right now about in or out a Relationshipand are they in a good Place when they awake the next Morning come on I hope they start not all this Stuff again in Season 5.That they have to figure out to come along as Lovers that is ok but I don't want to see them break up because of Alexis, or the anger of the secrets come along again, or because they can not work together when they are a couple.

    1. I don't know if you've heard Anon 8.34 AM, but Andrew Marlowe has explicitly stated (sometime around the beginning of Season 4) that once Rick and Kate get together they will not be torn apart. He has also stated enough times that he thinks there is so much material he can work with once they are together (which they are now). I don't expect everything to be plain-sailing from here, this is a TV Show after all! There will be bumps in the road ahead that will challenge them and their relationship but not to the extent that it will force them apart.

I think they've done a marvellous job with the relationship between Rick and Kate. That last scene with them was so good that I'm willing to bet that millions of TV and Computer Screens around the world have inadvertently melted because it was so hot!

They've left things very much open. So many questions. Like for example, what will happen to Mr Smith? A good guess would be that Cole Maddox kills him after retrieving those files that would harm his employer, forcing Rick and Kate to confront this case once again (maybe for the final time?). How is it that Kevin Ryan hasn't been suspended as well since he was also involved in their covering up of Roy Montgomery's involvement in this whole saga? Another question is what will be the true extent of Captain Gates discovering the revelation that three of her detectives had been hiding this evidence? We saw her way back in the Hero's and Villains episode want to keep a lid on the fact that Officer Hastings had been masquerading as one of the "Lone Vengeances". Will Captain Gates allow the details surrounding the conspiracy that began when Raglan, McCallister and Montgomery accidentally killed Bob Armen and framed an innocent Joe Pulgatti to ever see the light of day?

September seems so far away......... :(

    2. I thought I heard that earlier from Marlowe that once they were together he wouldn't rip them apart. I am sooo excited to see what next season brings. I never thought I would be sooo addicted to something...but I just can't help myself:)

  3. Good questions, all, but my biggest question now is what about Beckett? When she did, plus her resignation, would in most cases keep her from ever carrying a badge again -- certainly under Captain Gates.

    1) A civilian was injured (or probably killed) by the suspect in a situation that was not under any semblance of control by Beckett or Esposito.

    2) Esposito was assaulted, knocked out, and could have also been injured or, worse, killed, if the suspect wanted to take the time. He chose to assist her in this under-the-radar action, but she encouraged the conditions which fostered this particularly bad outcome in the first place.

    3) Beckett nearly got killed herself, again due to her reckless actions, so three people, including herself, in danger as a result of this rogue operation.

    4) Beckett (as well as Esposito) failed to follow procedures, including standing direct orders (remember, in Cuffed, Gates' started a new policy of going nowhere without checking in first), and went after a dangerous suspect without an adequate police force. I know she justified it with the corrupt cop comments, but AI is not likely to put a lot of stock in that excuse given her crusade to find her mother's killer, not to mention the sniper who shot her, and the results of this mess.

    5) Withholding evidence and lying to a superior officer, as Gates stated, which goes right to the matter of trust within the department. An officer who can't be trusted can be open to some problems as the judicial system moves along and defense attorneys look into who handled a client's case, as just one example of a bad consequence of violations in this area of trust. Others include fellow cops not wanting to work with the rogue element for fear of their own careers taking a hit, and complains (true or not) against a known rogue cop for any number of reasons (grudge, malicious mischief, attempt to blackmail via entrapment, etc.)

    6) Beckett encouraging others to lie as well. Ryan needed more convincing to go along, but Esposito did not. Still, she encouraged it with her decisions and orders.

Given all of this, I am having a very hard time seeing how Kate Beckett ever gets "Detective" put back into her name (or even "Officer") for any municipality or jurisdiction -- certainly under Captain Gates. If the cover-up regarding Montgomery's involvement in this situation gets out in the aftermath of this mess, then the chances are much less because the events in Always are no longer an isolated set of events but at the least a developing pattern.

I suppose Marlowe could surprise us with Beckett doing some other things, such as bounty hunter like Royce did, or her own detective agency for a bit, or just try to make it work as a civilian for a while -- all interesting possibilities. I'm not sure how that might go over, but I am curious to see how this aftermath is handled when season 5 arrives.

I know one thing -- having Castle call the Major to steamroll Gates again probably won't (and shouldn't) work -- he's termed out, as Gates noted before, and the Mayor's own standing was sideswiped in Dial M for Mayor. He's a lame duck with waning influence and that would be too simple a fix for the situation.

    1. That should be "Mayor", not Major.
      -- and --
"What", not "When" she did, plus her resignation

      Sorry about that, folks

  4. Continuing with above Anon 12:55 PM since I found there is a limit to what can be published at a time (whoops!)...

Always was a great episode, don't misunderstand my comments. The Castle/Beckett romantic angle from conflict to last scene was nicely handled, almost perfectly. I still think the ILY needed to be said, though, but Beckett being Beckett, her "I'm so sorry" may be as close as she was ready to go at that moment (although it was a huge step for her). She's always had a difficult time admitting when she is wrong, and an even harder time saying things of a positive, affectionate nature to someone. It's always "like", not "love". That wall of hers is still up, although it is breaking down a bit thanks to Dr. Worf, among others (wonder what he might think of this rogue operation...Worf would understand, but Burke?)

Alexis' graduation speech was probably one of the most sensible, wise, realistic, and notable one's I've heard, in entertainment and in real life. Whomever put that one together did a fine job of capturing the doubts, fears, and hopes of a young lady who hates changes and endings but recognizes both are inevitable in life. Like someone once said, it's not the end, it's only the end of the beginning, and Alexis' speech, in her own words, conveyed that thought to me quite nicely. Well done.

Anyway, that's my two cents. Season 5 is going to be a potential for great changes to come. We'll see how many or few are realized.

    Should be interesting

    1. I didn't feel that we needed to hear an ILY from Kate just yet. She said, "I'm so sorry." 3 times- the same number of times that Castle has told her he loves her, so in her own way she did tell him she loves him. Marlowe has also said that we'll be seeing the immediate aftermath of Always. I'm betting she'll say ILY the morning after, or maybe even right after they have sex. They have to save some of the good stuff for season 5!

  5. Maddox is looking down at Kate hanging from the ledge. He says WE know who WE are up against. WE to me implys that she should know who or what the dragon is..

    1. The "WE" comment to me means that the shooter is more than a hired gun. Probably somebody close to the so called dragon. But beckett should know the dragon as almost everybody in the castle-verse, if indeed the dragon is a politician in power.
