GMMR: Andrew Marlowe on the Castle and Beckett ‘Always’ Fallout

So, CASTLE fans, are you still breathing?

(Take a second, I can wait.)

After all, after four seasons of dancing around each other, Castle and Beckett took a major step forward in their relationship at the end of “Always”…one of those relationship-altering steps that has likely broken a couple of social media sites.

To get some dish on why the timing was right for the duo now, what fans can expect in a probable season 5 and more, I spoke with CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe to get the dish…

It feels crazy to say it, but Castle and Beckett have now gone there. What made the timing right for these two now?

Andrew Marlowe: Because it was absolutely time. And honestly, this was a decision that became clear to us about 2/3s of the way through last season when we made the decision of how we were ending last season. It’s impossible for Castle to say “I love you” and leave that hanging in the air and have the characters know that that’s out there and wait much longer to deal with that in an interesting and honest way.

We’re 81 episodes in, we’ve done a lot of storytelling having not gone there. And my personal feeling is we were on the verge of creating very artificial mechanisms of keeping them apart. And we were on the verge of rehashing storytelling in their relationship and we were in danger of not moving forward. So we had always aimed for this as being the end [result] of this season. And when people look back on this season, they will see the rhythm and they will look at the moments where they were really frustrated and understand why we did it then and what we were going for, because we always knew we were going to end up here.

    Okay let me just say that 'Always' was the most amazing season finale I could have ever hoped for. Intense, emotional, and did you SEE that KISS?!?!?!!! :-D Best dam kiss on television!!!!! I'm going to take a moment to congratulate AM and the producers and writers of this amazing show. You guys rock!!!! I never doubled you!!!!
    And no all that's left is to wait for season 6....

  3. This finale was the best I have ever watched!!! I agree Marlowe did a great job with the season and the finale. I hope that it is his intention to keep these two together and let their relationship grow and not try to pull them apart to keep the show going. I actually think someone said yesterday that they had heard that Marlowe said he wouldn't try to pull them apart when they did get together...I just hope that is true!

  7. Always was epic... no question about it... and the actors are great. the talk between kate and rick in kate's apartment was brilliantly written. I might have enjoyed it more had I not seen the spoilers. ryan and espo characters were portrayed brilliantly... one character with a family.. how he thinks and how the other one thinks...
    but I am not with Marlow about the whole season.. the frustrating episodes.... I still think there are some unnecessary episodes which made the characters look cheap. I hope the creators don't play those cheap tricks in future episodes

      Can anybody tell how to get out of fandom? This is the first time I am a fan of something. Well.. I was fan of sherlock holmes but there are a limited and after reading the books again and again, my addiction to it is gone. now I am addicted to castle and stana katic. how should I get over it

    3. Don't get over it! Castle is the best show on TV, and I can't get over it either! Just enjoy this awesome show and it's equally awesome fandom. (if you really want to try and get out, maybe watch Heartbreak Hotel over and over? The Limey, too. Those were the 2 worst episodes this season.)

  10. i have been a loyal fan for 3 years. I absolutely loved the first three seasons. Adored dem. But the fourth ws a little off beat!! M still waiting for the fifth season;no doubt... But hey!! Dey shd have really not put in some episodes whch were plain and simple invigorating.

    1. I WAS THINKING THE SAME EXACT THING!!! Glad someone else picked up on the similarities between the scene in the book and the scene on the show. This show is so meta it's messing with my brain hahaha :)

      Heat would clutch his hand place it on her breast. Beckett will clutch his hand and place it on her heart.

      Oh... what would I know... 3 weeks back if anybody had said that I would like Nikki character over Kate character.. I would have laughed at them.. now how I am wishing Kate takes some clues from Nikki :lol:

  13. The finale was incredible and amazing ! Stana and Nathan were right when they said our happiness would be a 12.9 out of 10! only thing that left me a tad disappointed- Kate didnt say ILY. Yet I think what she did say spoek volumes in the end. Also after he kissed her scar and she put took his hand and put it over her chest,her heart . in a way it could be just seen as something sexual but for me it was way more that that. It was like she was comforting Castle letting him know that shes there and that he has her heart. So the scene was played out the very best it could be without the actual words ILY from Kate! i really hope we get to hear her say it in the premire or soon after!
    Like I said though it was a beautiful scene. I loved how it was hot and passionate yet tender in the end. I also loved how Kate had to make the first move and apologize,but then Castle took over ans she didnt fight it !
    I feel so sad for Ryan though -he saved Kates life but Espistio his angry at him and he lost his whole team...poor guy:(

    2. Isn't it bothering anybody that Castle hesitated to kiss Beckett in the beginning and she had to lead him into his bedroom.

      and don't you want to know when Beckett changed from pullover sweater to a single button top (in the fight scene and resigning scene she has this black sweater. she changed into something convenient to pop open in the kiss scene :lol:)

    3. The first part -- No, it doesn't bother me. I figure Castle was still upset, angry, and in the process of purging Beckett out of his life. He deleted the files and shut off the phone. His trust, at that moment, was as broken in regard to her as Beckett's was in him. I read the scene as pain and anger at seeing her again, then at surprise at her answer to why she was there. Even though he then proceeded to shut the door with Beckett's body, I think he was still surprised at where things were going and just let Beckett take the initiate (which meant he both cared and trusted her still).

      Just my thoughts.

    4. As to Beckett's change in wardrobe... I just assume that time flowed a bit different for both of the characters. Graduation speeches and ceremonies can last a while -- plenty of time for Beckett and Esposito to get dressed down (pun intended) by Gates, Beckett resigning, packing and leaving the 12th, go home, change out of her work clothes, get soaked in the rain while thinking about things, and then show up at Castle's place -- long after the graduation ceremonies have already concluded. And, yes, deliberate choice on her part regarding the clothes, I think LOL

    5. I loved Kate's "I'm sorrys." She said it once for each time Castle told her he loved her, so we didn't need her to say "I love you," because she did it in her own way.

      Did Castle kiss her scar? I've watched it a kazillion times, but the lighting is pretty dark, so I may have missed it.

    6. I thought it was rather appropriate that it was Beckett who was leading Castle at the end. Hasn't that been the premise of the whole series? Beckett leads, Castle follows. Only this time she was leading him to a whole new chapter for the two of them. I thought it was incredibly heart warming. Just fantastic!

    8. Anon 8:08- She apologized for a lot of reasons. For not coming clean with him that she had heard his ILY. For the fight in the apartment. For initially choosing her case over him. Kate needed to apologize to clear the air and start fresh with Castle. The symbolism of the 3 "Sorrys" is her way of saying "I love you," for now, at least.

I just read all of the interviews with AM and from the looks of it I don't think he will pull a Grey's Anatomy and get Castle and Beckett together just to split them apart (MerDer got together in S1, split up in S2, got together in S3, split up in S4, and finally got together for good in S5). It actually sounds like he plans on keeping Castle and Beckett a "couple" for the long run... possibly resulting in a marriage!!! Of course there will be challenges that arise (I'm especially looking forward to how they handle the whole "when do we tell people about us"? "do we keep this a secret from our friends"? aspect of season 5).
    The finale was well worth the wait... AM is a creative genius and I'm glad he realizes when a specific story arc was past its prime. Kudos to the entire Castle team. I hope the next 4+ months go by at light speed... I seriously don't know how I can get through the week without new episodes of Castle!!!

    1. I agree caskett are together for good! There will be no pulling apart, even though there will be bumps. I look forward to the bumps in the road, because that will only strengthen their relationship. I just look forward to their relationship in general. :) I can't wait to see the challenges too, and I can't wait for the Alexis/ Kate scenes and the Martha/ Kate scenes. I would love to see them all bonding and getting closer. Even more lanie and Kate scenes would be great. I'm not worried about the boys cause season 5 is supposed to by lighter and more fun and AM said the show was going back to it's basics of kate pulling rick's ear and things like that. One part of the basics was espo and Ryan both teasing caskett. And now that they are together, they boys should be having a field day next season. Also I loved always. Best finale ever! Also it's really special cause during this summer we can watch all 4 seasons again leading to the season 5 premiere!! On a side note am I the only one who remembers rick's convo on the phone with Alexis before Kate kissed him and the final scene?!? Alexis is coming back the NEXT day, guys. So I guess we know the first person who will find out their together. LOL

      Alexis comes home: 'Dad? It's almost lunch time are you still in bed?' Opens door: 'Oh!!' Closes door very quietly, stunned look turns into an enormous smile 'YES!!'

      Nice to think about but who knows. Guess we'll all find out in September.

    3. Ya, I just hope they don't do the whole Alexis against them together storyline. I don't exactly know where her and Alexis are at with each other but I hope her and Rick dating bring Kate and Alexis closer, not apart.

    4. I'm curious to see how Alexis will react to this whole situation. Sorry, Anon 4:49, but I think your scenario is wishful thinking ;) Alexis has never factored into my vision for Caskett, so I'll be very interested to see where Marlowe takes it. I don't think she'll rebel against it, but she won't be all for it, either. I think it's something she'll struggle with through season 5. Alexis knows her father is in love with Kate, but how is she supposed to approve of the woman who puts her father in constant danger? Is her father replacing her by bringing Kate more fully into his life? I know we'll be seeing less of Alexis next season, but hopefully, these questions are addressed when we do see her.

  15. Absolutley love the question about marriage! I am suprised Malowe even gave an answer...but maybe possibly before season 8 ? Castles not getting any younger lol. I know that this dosen't mean that we will for sure get to see a married Caskett someday in the future and that it probably wasn't a totally serious but it just made me soooo happy !

  16. Did it bother anyone other than I, that no matter how angry, hurt and host of myriad feelings presented upon Castle.... He got two calls, one from 12th precinct and another from Beckett and he chose not to answer! I understand why he wouldn't but could you really turn off the concern like a switch fully knowing what Beckett is suddently up against!!! Its a professional hitman for gods sake and her badass copstyle is by no means any match to the dark forces they is hell bent on fighting. YEs, I get it he is angry byond belief.....but still what if she would die ( yes its their show, she wont ) but I am trying to pretend its real life for once! That call from Ryan was could have been a fatal blow!

    I was slightly bothered by it.... Even though I understood his reason. That heart wrenching call for castle when she knew she was done on that ledge and even when Ryan pulled her up and was calling for her.... All her heard was Rick's voice. & Ryan did call Castle for help.... Imagine if she fell!!

    1. after watching it for so many times, everybody is finding some flaws. but for your question, he was sure they are going to hurt her.. even kill her. he said that in the argument in Kate's apt.so, he doesn't want to be around when she is throwing away her life. that is why he was cutting off anything related to KAte including precinct.

      And the part I liked the most is how Kate realized she is in love with Castle. all along she was trying to get a little closer to Castle (by saying that she is trying to move on from her mother's murder etc.) but she was still putting Castle at distance.
      When she was on the ledge struggling for her life, she realized that she doesn't have to try, they were always part of each other and she wanted him always... I couldn't put all my feelings into words properly... I am not a writer... AWM is :)

    2. After reading my reply, I thought it sounded rude.. my intention isn't rude... I saw it so many times and I am finding so many silly things like the first blue sweater she is wearing is not the same as the blue sweater in the next scene (though the color is the same)... those kind of things... I need to find something which can stop me from watching it again... I spent all the time since morning just watching it again and again :(

    3. I know exactly why did did what he did. Please don't get me wrong! I am not in any means trying to nitpick or offer scrutiny! I think AWM has done a phenomenal job at writing this tory from day 1, the progression through these seasons and the character development has been outstanding! Its not that easy to be such a visionary when most of his Castle fans are rooting for instant gratification!
      I thought this was a epic saga that unfolder last night! It goes hand in hand with a epic series finale for many other shows, and we are just at midway point!!!

      I simply felt, that regardless of Castles anger and even after he told her its over! I would have liked to watch him struggle a bit when those calls came, just concerned for her! In real life, I think we react with concern when the danger is truly life threatning! Its just my openion, not saying I loved every aspect of it any less. Just would've liked to see Castle struggle or wonder nervously!

There's so much of meaningless bashing that goes on in these blogs without once considering that its after all the journey that makes life ( Castle) so very alluring!! I think you just like many feel frustrated at these criticisms without a clear thought process or even the desire to look beyond the surface.

      I loved this show, I have rarely watched a show that enthralled me more! Though must admit for a grown woman I loved Smallville!!! And the Lois & Clark saga!!

      I think this show will go places and Marlowe will continue to intrigue, frustrate and surprise us all the way! I am looking forward to the morning after, their initial awkwardness, their descision to what I suspect to keep it a secret for now ( that open up to far more storyline and fun, especially at work.... Working through family dynamics..... And lord know, each other!!! Castle will drive her crazy even in Love! & I will be there to watch their every move!!!

  18. As much as I love that last scene between C & B, I was REALLY annoyed at the editing. And at the first viewing (not after watching it 20 times) : tears appearing out of nowhere as you said, but mostly that shot of castle's face just before he pushes her against the door : the lightning made him look really spooky, he seamed 2 feet away from Beckett when she was only inches from his head in the previous shot, and the tone of colors of that shot was so different from the rest (more blueish than yellowish) that it really seemed like the shot was from a totally different part of the episode.
    When I first saw the scene, I was really drawn out of it wondering what the heck was that. Really bad editing. I'm a bit mad for it ruining the scene for me.


    And a thing I noticed after several viewing : during the "I'm sorries", her hands are either on his shoulders or on his cheeks.


    On a more positive note, I'm glad AM and everyone making Castle were true to the characters and did not try to keep them apart artificially. It is very bold of them to go where the characters lead them, and not changing the characters personalities to fit the story they want to tell (Huddy anyone? or a lot of other tv couples for that matter), or just finding a way to break them up just to get the sexual tension again. Breaking people up artificially does not bring the sexual tension back, it brings angst and annoyment and takes out the fun.
    There are other ways to keep the sexual tension going and yes, it can be with them still in a relationship. Just keep the banter and the flirting and the subtexts!

    Which is why I'm glad he said they'll bring the fun back because I really watch it for that. I rewatch more often episodes from season 1 and 2, than 3 or 4. Nose and ear pinching, annoying each other, banter, flirting, finishing their sentences... You can really imagine them already being in a relationship in season 2.
    Glad they'll be inspired by the Thin Man!!

    6 seasons and a movie!
    Hell! 10 seasons and movie!

    What I wish we'll see :

    - The morning after (yeah! We're getting it!)
    - Them keeping it a secret for a while (oh, all the innuendos and subtext we can get!)
    - Rick trying to finish his book but Kate trying (and succeeding) to distract him
    - Generaly, more of Castle as an author, and Beckett annoying him (a bit of role reversal)
    - Papparazzis
    - A jealous Castle fan who wants to take down Beckett once the world knows he's not a bachelor anymore
    - The red carpet premiere of the Nikki Movie
    - a foot massage
    - a game of laser tag or sparring (remember the Demming scene) that ends in bed

    Any other wishes?

  20. All good ideas!i think the hamptons murder is a wonderful idea!and then they can swim in the sea,and kissing..all wet..i like to see them together in all the daily activities like make breakfast together...etc
    and also take a shower together :-)really hope in this....but i know it's impossible

    1. yeah.. they should make up for the 4 years lost. So, the morning after - By the time Kate wakes up, Rick is already up and caressing her hair, looking lovingly at her beautiful face. She wakes up, they kiss and she says thanks for last night. he says pleasure is mine. she says too bad we put his off all these years... he says, we can make it up. she says, do you want to join me in shower? and from then on, they do it multiple times through out the day.

      yeah.. it might be impossible. moreover, nikki heat would do it. not kate beckett... I hope I am underestimating kate beckett

  21. I would like to see good Gates. I mean like a good mentor. After Kate resigns, Gates (ofcourse didn't accept her resignation) talks to Beckett about how she should be strategic in solving her mother's case instead of hastily running after the bad guy especially in a field which is primarily a man's job.
    Because, in real life, if your manager is like you, doesn't she mentor you?

  22. The ending. The love scene. Oh my God. It felt real. The acting was incredibly believable. You almost felt like you were there. It was Hot! They connected and the audience felt connected to their characters. Awesome storytelling!

  24. Yes I would love a Christmas castle, or valentines day one! We had that one in season 3 but in that one beckett was dating josh... Also, I would love to see a thanksgiving one where they decide to cook dinner together either for them, Martha, Alexis, and Kate's dad, or all those people and the precinct group! It would be so funny! And they could do something like drop the turkey, or burn something, but everything turns out good in the end! ( and they can give each other taste tests!) also, just basic stuff that people do day to day will be nice and cute to see!
