TVLine: What to Expect on the Castle Season Finale

May 7

What to Expect | Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse alum Tahmoh Penikett kicks off a potentially recurring gig as Cole Maddox, a cold and calculated man with a military background. On the Castle/Beckett relationship front, expect “a very emotional finale, one where we put a lot of our cards on the table,” says creator Andrew W. Marlowe. Captain Montgomery’s wife, Evelyn (played by Judith Scott), also returns when “events force us to wonder whether the case [Beckett and Castle are] working on might be linked to Beckett’s mother murder case.”

  3. The more I hear about the finale the more worried I am that we might be disappointed. It seems they will have an emotional conversation where things are reveled, but I am guessing we won't see much more then that! I hope I am wrong, but I have read "put a lot of our cards on the table" one to many times. I am still excited to see how it all plays out, but fear that we will have to wait till next season to really see anything on the romance front!

    2. Me, too! I'm so tired of that one. (Plus, it doesn't really mean anything. Weren't they supposedly putting their "cards on the table" last year?)

  5. yeah in a way im a little worried that we wont get much progress in the finale... But stana and nathan both said that caskett fans will be happy with the finale(remember the 12.595 comment ?) so that gives me hope cause stanas a shipper. I just hope this "talk" will lead to some major progress between the two(and no i dont think that has to mean sex lol) but i think that forgiving each other for the secrets, declerations of love, and of course an of AMAZING kiss wouldnt be too much to ask and would satisfy me ;)

  6. I think that 'Always' is just to get our hopes and then we get our hearts ripped out after it airs. I mean, I honestly cannot see something GOOD happening and then BAM! Fade to black. That is not AM's style, we all know it. I mean, I think there will be moments of fleeting happiness for fans, but then the big cliffhanger will be more on the side of tense then blissful. Hot sex would be great before the big fade out, but I cannot see that, no matter how much I wish.

    1. I'm sure the creators of this show are aware of the significance to the fans of the word "always". Therefore I doubt they would use it as a title of an episode unless it is either the beginning of the Castle and Beckett relationship proper, or at the very least an acknowledgement from both of them about their feelings for one another (as both of them have proven to be absolutely hopeless at communicating with each other about the things that REALLY matter).

    2. Oh, no doubt that it will be an episode where they leave all the cards on the table, I am just not convinced this is going to end up being a good thing in the end. There is the fact Castle is still withholding the fact he is investigating her mothers murder behind her back. I can't imagine that would make her feel awesome, would it you? I just think we are expecting too much from just using the title 'Always'. Cheers :)

On another note, if you look closely at Rise, and the case file that Smith is reading, there is clearly a picture of the Fire Chief...so what is his roll in all this?

    3. Anon 8.46 PM here again. They've been saying all season long that both secrets were going to be out well before the finale. Recently Andrew Marlowe was quoted as saying that there is some interesting story-lines they can use with both secrets coming out well before the finale, but that doesn't necessarily mean that that's what they'll do. I think it's most likely that Rick's secret will come out during the "Always" episode. There's also been talk of Jim Beckett making an appearance in the finale. He only shows up in the most important episodes. My inkling is that he will appear after Rick's secret is out. Kate will be pissed (but I don't think she'll be as mad as she was back in the Season 2 opener), and I would love to see her father tell her that he asked Rick to protect her when he said to him: "don't let her throw her life away". This piece of information will help Kate deal with the ramifications of Rick's secret hugely and will cause her to forgive him for it. I can understand a lot of people wanting to be pessimistic to avoid the feeling of being let down if Castle and Beckett don't get together in the finale, but I feel the time has come where both of them can no longer tip-toe around their feelings for each other and something has to give. Looking forward to these last few episodes of the season. The storm clouds are slowly moving away and the bright sunshine is coming.

In terms of the Fire Chief, I suspect he was paid off by the "Dragon" to write off the fire as an electrical fault, when it was obviously deliberate to destroy some bank files that could expose this person. A lot like the way John Raglan was forced to write off the murders committed by Dick Coonan (including Johanna Beckett) as "random gang violence".

    4. Really good insights, anon :) Especially the part about Jim Beckett. Only in really important times do we really see him. Can't wait to see how it all plays out. I know we all will be on edge!

And that was my thoughts, too, on the chief.

      Good stuff! Good stuff.

      Delete
    5. Thanks tickingtimeclock. Yeah I always enjoy the scenes with Jim, although they're few and far between. One other thing to remember is that he was also at the funeral of Roy Montgomery and witnessed Rick trying (unsuccessfully) to tackle Kate out of the way of the bullet (and he was also standing next to Martha and Alexis, a bit of foreshadowing maybe? Future relatives?). We don't know how he handled seeing Rick do what he did because Kate's life hung in the balance at the time and would've taken top priority of his feelings. I think he knew though from that point on that Rick would do anything to protect Kate's life (even put his own life in danger to protect her's) and I hope he brings this up with Kate if there is a scene with the two of them together. His advice once more, just like in Sucker Punch, will reinvigorate his daughter and like I said before will lead to her forgiving Rick. I don't know if this will push her into admitting her feelings directly to Rick though. I think seeing Rick in life-threatening danger (a mirror situation to her being shot) will be the trigger that forces it out of her.

  7. Is Cole Maddox the sniper or the dragon?

  8. Anon05:39

He is too young to be the Dragon, so I guess he is the sniper, fits the profile too, I think.

  9. Yeah they play up the finale so much that it's making me wonder if it really is even going to be as good as they claim. AM has said put cards on the table like a million times, so does that mean , it's going to be like other episodes, they come close but then nothing. Hhmm...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Personally I think we are expecting more than they will actually give. Emotional? Why? Does someone leave again...castle or Beckett this time. It's the same old story, I hope I'm wrong.

Yeah sometimes spoilers can actually make you less interested. Like this has done for me. And I can't help us feel Always is just a title they put to get everyone to watch. I mean that word means a lot in castle land, and I don't believe Marlowe is actually going to do it justice. He loves dragging things out, so I'm very doubtful.

    1. People are going to watch the season finale no matter what the title. It's not like they'd attract new viewers with that title, as they'd have no idea of the significance of it. What kind of justice to the title you expecting? I think the title is there for a good reason, and we all will be satisfied if we don't expect butterflies and rainbows and an instant, functioning relationship between Castle and Beckett.

    2. Good job!!! Marlowe is a son of a b.... And it's ok for me. He drives me mad most of time and I wish he's gonna take care of "always". I'm sure he's gonna give us a good finale. Anyway, whatever he does, I keep on looking at that f... good show!!!

  11. Im not expecting much at all. oh they will be friends and partners again. They will smile at each other and walk to the eleavator holding hands. See you all in the fall. Well lets hope so.

  12. The betting line in Vegas for Beckett telling Castle she loves him is 50-1 for this season. It's 25-1 for season 5. They'll get together when she makes captain...LOL

    1. Are you serious? Is there really a betting line about this in Vegas, because that's hilarious! I really think Beckett's going to tell him she loves him by the end of this season. It would come full circle, because Castle told her ily in the last finale, and that's totally marlowe's style.

    2. How's this some the finale?

Kate: I can't let you risk your life Rick, I care about you too much. Think of your family.
Rick: The last time I checked, We're partners Kate. I've got your back.
      {Now holding hands}
      Kate: Always.
      Rick: Always.

      Fade to black.

lol Seems like good odds to me.

  13. Blah, blah, blah. If I hear the phrase, "they will put their cards on the table" one more time...How about "they will make out table" instead.

  14. I swore that Castle at the end of Season 2 could in no way end up like Bones. And yet, here we are.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes 1038 I feel the same way. Dragged on to long. They are still trying to drag it out longer. Im sure a lot of the fans think this is great. Im getting bored. I dont care if they ever get together. Lets get back to good old crime solving.

  16. Text analysis 101:
'We put a lot of our cards on the table'
    We [the writers]
put [place, but not necessarily act on]
a lot of [many, but not all of]
our cards [the writers' ideas about the plot]
on the table [on screen, on the episode]

If you add this to the previous 'they're going to confront teir feelings', we can think that they might address these issues verbally but not really act on them. I think this is going to end with them telling each other how they feel, maybe a kiss but I wouldn't bet on it, and finally a cliffhanger about Kate finding out Castle also hid something from her (mum's case investigation) or something related with Johanna's case.

Arggghh! Why do they have to be so cryptic and we do I have to be so impatient?

    1. This is pretty much what I expect to happen in the finale, too. Maybe a few declarations but no actions, and we're left feeling ever so slightly underwhelmed, and then there's the cliffhanger of Kate finding out Castle's secret.

Though that would piss me off immensely because that would mean yet ANOTHER summer apart, and yet again it'll be because Beckett is mad at Castle. This'll be the fourth season they've pulled that, and I'll be very disappointed if it happens.

  17. Remaining season 4 and season 5 short version. Each secret cancels the other one out so neither party has any leverage to be p/o'd with other. They lay their cards on the table, seal it with a kiss, then don't discuss until half way through season 5.

Meanwhile, AM and the cast tweet and interview about them getting together and that we should all "be patient." Sure enough, at the half way point of season 5, just as emotions are about to spill, Espo or Ryan walk in and scuttle the love.

The fans go berserk and complain on this site. Pathalogical shippers tell the complainers to shut up and hurl accusations of treason.

As the season nears its end, Marlowe is in full spin mode explaining that there is more story telling yet to come!

    Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

  18. When they told us about this character for the first time, I was hoping it would be Agent Shaw, based on the vague description. I came up with this whole story in my head about what would happen if it were her, and now I am kind of disappointed.

I hope once these two (stubborn) lovebirds finally get together, they bring back characters from past seasons to see how they react, Agent Shaw would be a great one.

    1. I would love to see Agent Shaw return! I was just watching an old episode of Desperate Housewives, and Nathan plays Dana Delaney's husband. It would be fun to see them together on Castle again!

  19. I think from recent quote 'one where we put a lot of our cards on the table'..means all the secrets will be out in the season finale.. it does not tell us how they would react... I think they may spend time apart(over the summer) to think it through.. then next season AM promised will return to fun...how they deal with the elephant(their feelings for each other) in the room.. there will more hot insurance agents without the hat...more devilish handsome guys... in hindsight I see a pattern. No offense I think watching the last 3 mins of the episode is enough to figure out whats going on..

    ReplyDelete
  20. I rolled my eyes when I read the article. Haha yeah, come on is this last years speech? Anyway I think secrets will be out, but nothing more. The more I read all these spoilers, the more it sounds like they are really trying to make it sound like caskett will actually deal with things, but this is Marlowe here. When has he made things easy. No offense to those who love, I do too, but I feel like nothing much will happen. By the looks of the past few eps, it just may be a disappointment.

So far we have had the actors all hint towards caskett fans being happy, but with Marlowe, it's just too good to be true. He always gets the, close enough, only to have the, pull away for 20 episodes, then confess something. I think they will indirectly say they want to be together, not even directly because then there's no subtext for Marlowe to fall back on. So it will be indirectly, just hinted, not declared that they love each other. Definitely no I love yous will be thrown in.

Then some huge cliffhanger, some crying, some hurt or injured...season 5, they need to deal with the aftmath of the cliffhanger, and also deal with their very indirectly spoken feelings. A little more smiles here and there, gentle tugs on the hand, but nothing else. They decide mutually they need to heal from everything, and whilst they love each other, getting into a relationship will just not work. Then the occasional woman or man to stir up feelings will be there, and at the end of the episode, they say something cheesy like you have nothing to worry about, hence assuring them that they are waiting for each other. Season 5 finale, they sleep together because they can't take the wait anymore, and some other cliffhanger. Season 6...who knows...

I'm not trying to be sarcastic here, I seriously think this is what will happen. As much as Marlowe says he isn't afraid of the moonlighting curse, he so is. His work proves it. I just wished he admitted it rather than trying to be everything hart Hanson isn't. Well to him as long as caskett get together by season 6, he thinks he is doing us a favor, because it will be a season earlier than bones. Just petty games.

    1. All the above. I really thought Marlowe was one of those people who didn't put any stock in that god damn moonlighting curse, but as the seasons drag on and they ALMOST get there, only to be interrupted or something equally inane, then I'm beginning to believe he really is trying to just delay it as much as possible.

      Delete
    2. I agree. It's only logical that they want to delay it as much as possible. And they can't do it once they say 'I love you'. One they say that, what would be the excuse not to get them together? Marlowe would have to change the strategy and portray a couple, not man and a woman who might become a couple. The game would be about keeping the relationship secret at first maybe, or placing obstacle along the way, or making funny things happen in their daily life... I don't know but it would definitely change things. Which is not necessarily bad, don't get me wrong. I might be something we would enjoy to see.

    3. While I cannot deny that delaying relationships in these sorts of shows is part-of-the-parcel so to speak, I'm getting the vibe that both of these characters are being forced into a position where they simply cannot hide from their feelings any longer and have to act on it. The ultimate goal of the secrets appears to be to force Rick and Kate to talk about the issues that REALLY matter to them. I know that sounds a bit strange considering Rick has been going AWOL since discovering that Kate lied to him and hasn't confronted Kate directly about it yet, (simply because he thinks she'll just confirm what he's thinking, that she doesn't love him back, which he doesn't know isn't true), but when both secrets are out and the dust has settled these two are going to be at a whole new level in their relationship. They simply cannot delay the inevitable any longer once the dust has settled from the fallout of the secrets. Andrew Marlowe may or may not be scared of some silly mythical "Moonlighting Curse", but he has stated enough times that he thinks there is so much more material he can work with once Rick and Kate are together. He also stated that when they do become a couple they will stay that way until the day the show's run ends. I think that having Rick and Kate begin their relationship might actually give this show a humongous boost, rather than drag the show down like people believe happened to Moonlighting. It will add an entirely new element to this show and would definitely ramp up the humour factor, as the humourous aspect of the show has been pulled back a bit (but not completely) as they have been keeping their secrets from each other.

      Delete
    4. Yes, I like what you said about boosting the humourous aspect of the show. That's what I meant here above. I think ehancing the humourous side of situations once they are together would be the right way to go. We don't want it to become a soap opera. It needs to be still Castle.

      Delete
    5. Anon 11.59 AM here again. Thanks Anon 12.51 PM! I think we got a good taste of what was to come in the future (once they're together) in the episode Cuffed in terms of the humour that both of them will engage in once they're officially a couple. There were so many hilarious moments and situations they found themselves in in that episode. Andrew Marlowe loves foreshadowing and Cuffed was a great example of it. I would love to see them use that kind of banter and togetherness they showed in that episode as the core of how they interact once they're together. I'm sure that this show will continue to perform strongly if they go down this road as long as they don't get too repetitive and find new and unexpected ways to surprise the viewers.

  21. Maybe the "lay everything on the table" means that castle and Beckett will actually have sex on castle's poker table. You know how much AM loves inuendo with his dialogue ..I hope I'm right
