Ask Ausiello & Mega Buzz - 4/10/12

Question: Any new information on Tahmoh Penikett’s role in the Castle finale? —Jesse

Ausiello:  Come on, Jesse. His character is cold, calculated and ex-military. And it’s the season finale. Think. You can do this.

I know Castle is trying to keep Castle and Beckett apart, but why is he acting like such a brat? — Liz

ADAM:
He's just being a man, creator Andrew W. Marlowe says. "Men in general usually don't confront their feelings," he says of Castle's reaction to learning that Beckett remembers Castle's declaration of love. "He's certainly not the type of person to go up to Beckett and say, 'Hey, you hurt me!' because that would be exposing himself. He's expressing his anger with Beckett, and whether he knows it or not, he's trying to punish her without really putting his cards on the table." But don't worry: Beckett will soon figure out what set Castle off, thanks to another revealing chat with her therapist.

  4. Both of these look promising. Hopefully, progress will be made on the sniper front. but I'm more excited about Kate figuring out why Castle is so angry. I wasn't looking forward to the next episode very much, maybe it will be better than I thought.

  5. Andrew Marlowe could use a good therapist himself.

  6. So there's the 12-year old again.

Girl, you had him figured out 60 episodes ago. Move on. He ain't no good for you.

    1. In a way you've nailed it. This is organic character development?

    2. Totally agree. He's completely gone back to season 1.

  7. Castle is such coward. This means that he's not going to do anything except act like a jerk, and she's going to suddenly realize that he knows in a 2 second scene with her therapist, and confess her feelings to him and they just jump in bed together. I'm sorry that I'm being so pessimistic, but Castle is being so immature and Marlowe thinks that is okay. Not cool.

    1. Also...I'm not sure how he can truly her unconditionally now. If he confronted her and thought that either she didn't love him or wasn't ready and either tried to move on or wait for her, that would be fine, but he's punishing her without even knowing how she feels about him or why she didn't tell him. I'm sorry, but I just hope they resolve this crap by the finale and then, we can start over again in the premiere.

    2. I think you should give Castle a break. Yes, he is wrong to act like a brat, but I believe he did that becoz he had trust issues now. He had been betrayed/let down by so many people in his life, Sofia, Damian, his dad, Meredith. He too is a damaged good, and Kate is the last person in his life that he'd want to let down by. That's why he won't forgive her that easily, becuase her lie is huge, almost like a betrayal to him.

I think we should thanks Dr.Bruke for helping Beckett to connect the dots, and glad that that their relationship is started to rebounce from the ebb in recent eps. I certainly hope that, we can see them apologize to each other at the end of this ep, although I believe it is next to impossible.

    3. Second this - I'm getting a bit sick of alot of these borderline sexist comments. Some people seem to be forgetting that it's partly Kate's fault for this situation. Yes Castle is being a jerk and an idiot for avoiding her but remember he doesn't have the same knowledge that the audience does. He thinks that Beckett doesn't feel the same way and if he confronts her then he will just get more heartbroken. Also, PLEASE give Marlowe a break as well.

    5. @ anons 8:08 and 8:34 That still doesn't give him an excuse to rub the blonde flight attendant in her face and trying to make her jealous. That only explains why he's hurt and why he won't confront her, which I'm okay with. I want him to be angry. I don't want him to forgive her right away, because then he would look like such a wuss and it would seem like he doesn't even care about their relationship/partnership. I want him to confront her, but it's also not going to ruin his character for me.

It's the blonde and the Ferrari that really make me angry and ruins his character for me. He doesn't love her unconditionally. If he really loved her unconditionally, he would have been really hurt, but he would have either moved on or waited for her. Not lash out and try to hurt her. Also, it's completely taking his character back to season 1. And it sickens me that Marlowe thinks that this what a man is supposed to do to a woman they love.

    6. " If he really loved her unconditionally, he would have been really hurt, but he would have either moved on or waited for her."

He can't move on because then there would be no Rick and Kate. He can't wait for her anymore because he's done that for a year and now just finds out that she knows he loves here, but won't acknowledge it. AND, most of all it's just TV...I'm quite sure Marlow doesn't thi this is what a man is supposed to do to a woman they love. Sit back and enjoy it, but don't take it too seriously.

    7. Anon 9:54 He could have got angry and took some time apart from Beckett to work on his writing and hang out with the other cop that was on Firefly with Nathan.

      OR

He could have tried to move on, but realize that he still has feelings for her (But that's been done before)

He didn't have to act like immature little boy and lash out. Marlowe has destroyed his character for me.

    8. Remember Castle thinks Beckett was embarrassed about his ILY because she doesn't feel the same way, how can Beckett get jealous if she doesn't have romantic feelings for him? He isn't flaunting the blonde to make Beckett jealous, he's doing it so she sees that he's moved on and isn't some pathetic love-sick puppy tagging at her heels. Trying to get his dignity back and salvage some pride. Didn't you catch his surprised look when he was talking about how great the lunch special was and Beckett responded with "I bet"...

In his mind Beckett has been thinking:
"Oh God! Why did he say ILY? I'll pretend I didn't hear it so it blows over. Oh good, he's finally found someone and moved on. Now it won't be awkward between us anymore". Except, he doesn't know what the audience knows. That Beckett loves him back and is actually jealous/hurt by his moving on.

  8. Does Marlowe remember the characters he writes? Castle has had no problem confronting her on things before. Whatever. This "he's a man" stuff is BS and a copout for his piss poor season 1 behavior.

Like a previous commenter said, THIS is organic character development? To make him regress to 4 years ago.

  9. What the heck is sexist about saying he is being a jerk?

Plenty of people on this site have said awful things about Kate for less offenses that Castle's recent behavior.

Plus Castle gets NO benefit of the doubt from me since he's not the one who has had such an awful time in life.

Cowardly telling someone you love them while they are dying and not reiterating it afterwards and then getting pissed at them before even discussing why they kept knowledge of said ILY from him is not at all what I would call traumatic life experiences at least not ones even close to the severity of what Beckett has been through since she was 19.

Marlowe is thoroughly out of touch if he thinks this how Castle should be reacting.

    1. Michael Ausiello is a television insider who worked his way up the ranks working for tv guide and entertainment weekly before finally launching his on web based entertainment site TVLine. He's actually quite respected in the entertainment world and he's known to keep things under wraps that should be kept under wraps so show runners, producers, actors, et al, feel comfortable chatting with him or allowing him to see advanced screenings of their shows. Hope that helps.

  12. can't you guys get over with castle being a jerk movement .... yeah he did acted like one,but it ain't his fault completely, its Kate's too... no matter what you don't keep a guy hanging and waiting for you for a year and always need a push from someone or jealousy issues to confront your feelings ...... both of them have been like this for all 4 season long.... So please stop lashing castle and marlowe and just enjoy this lovely story ... And take a fact in your stride that Beckett did get to know the reason behind castle's behaviour in the next episode ... The psychiatrist talk is really gonna be awesome as Kate will figure out everything....epic

  13. I have to admit that it bugs me somewhat that Kate has to find out by talking to her therapist why Rick's behaving like he is. It's like Marlowe has made her drop IQ points over these last few episodes, she can't figure out why herself? How complicated was it really to pin point the change and what happened that day?
And if the penny does finally drop I hope and pray she doesn't still keep quiet because if she does finally know why, what kind of person would keep still keep quiet and not want to talk to that person and say "hey I know why you're upset lets discuss it" So I really do hope she doesn't sit on this information because it will make her look really bad in my eyes.

As for Rick, I don't blame him for his rage and pain, just as I don't blame Kate for initially keeping the ILY from him. What I do mind is that she kept hanging on to this knowledge for far too long yet appeared to be happy to let him wait without really any intention of taking things further. It was only when Rick finally started to pull away from her that she panicked and started to think she should have done something and then wanted to talk to Lanie and her shrink and crying it was all too late.

That leads me to believe she had no intention of ever committing to a relationship with him because she felt safe in the here and now and if she wasn't going to tell him he would have been hanging around forever on a vague hope and a promise. She was too scared to take a leap of faith and in love that's what you need to do. Even better for her she already knew that he loved her so where was the real risk? It doesn't matter to me if your a man or a women you don't do that to someeone you care about, no matter what the reason.

As for Rick, he's not doing himself any favours lashing out, I get why he's doing it and he's totally within his rights to go out on dates or do whatever he wants as she's made no firm commitment to him verbally. However, his attitude is not helping him heal and its hurting Kate still further - he should have taken a beat and just calmly had it out with her and discovered the truth.

So I'm annoyed with both characters right about now in different ways.

But I'm hoping that things will move forward now Kate has may be finally figured out what is wrong and she will be more understanding and make her move sooner rather than later please!

    1. Yes Kate didn't make it obvious that she was working towards wanting a relationship with him, but she didn't start working towards that til after 4x09 when she realized that catching her mom's killer won't help her be a better person. Before 4x09, she thought her and Castle had an agreement: that she'd be ready for a relationship after they catches her mom's killer, so she wasn't thinking about fixing herself to be with him. Of course she knows he loves her, but that's more scary to her because she loves him back. She's afraid she'd mess up the relationship because let's face it, she's not perfect when it comes to romantic relationships, or she's afraid that he doesn't value her as much as she'd want to be valued (because of his playboy persona). She was working up to tell him, it was hinted on at 4x17 and 4x19 (only a few episodes after her PTSD breakdown, so give her a break).

I say don't get your hopes up about what Kate will learn from her conversation with her therapist. She's might be able to pinpoint that he knows she lied, but I doubt she'll pinpoint that he thinks she doesn't love him. She most likely won't go talk to him about it because she'll think "I deserve this, I lied to him and I should be punished for it", so she's going to let him be. I feel like if she does try to explain why she lied, he'd have to tell her that he thinks she doesn't love him and she'd have to say no, I do love you, but we all know that talk won't happen til the finale.

      Delete
    2. I guess you're right, they won't really talk until the finale now which is a shame.

It's not what I really wanted in truth. I would have preferred a conversation much earlier to give time for things to settle before moving on with his secret. Now it just seems they are piling everything on top of each other. Some may think this is more exciting but I prefer taking a little more time.

I also wish Kate had just figured all this out sooner and wasn't acting rather dense about it all - just seems odd for such a supposedly smart cop.

I can understand her being scared and not wanting to ruin things but I personally feel 10 months is way too long to keep someone hanging on without any indication that you intend to do anything further. She could have at least filled him in on how she was doing to reassure him a little, he's a good guy and should be treated with kindness and care.

      Delete
    3. I am not really unhappy about Beckett being dense about it. I think it's rather realistic. If I base my thinking on what I know best, aka My friends and I, we are fairly smart people. However in the matter of hearts, when we're in the middle of things, we can't figure out a single thing. For myself I could figure out any issues and thinkg like "This man likes you" for my friends. For myself, I don't see a think. I would say things like "no, he's just being a good friends"...but never see that it's way more than that.
When you're involved, you overthinking things or at the contrary you let things slide because you think things like "I am a pretty average person, why this guy should like me"....
I know it's messed up a little, but in my experience it how things goes. It's always way easier to see things from the side than when you're in the middle of it.

  15. I came up with a crazy idea for the finale: what if her therapist (Dr. Burke) gets murdered in the precinct and they discover two patient files were stolen, that of Kate and Roy Montgomery ... the team must take on the case to keep Montgomery's secret a secret, but in order to solve the case, Kate has to tell the team what's on her file (i.e. how she lied about the shooting and how she loves Castle and what her therapist knows about her mom's murder). The people that murdered the therapist are connected to her mom's murder. The team must talk to Evelyn Montgomery to find out what secrets he told to the therapist. The bad people behind Kate's mom's murder now know Kate's secret love for Castle, so they have leverage - kidnap Castle and threaten to kill him if she won't leave her mom's case alone. Kate is forced to choose between her past and future with Castle. She of course chooses Castle, allowing Castle to piece together how much she loves him, that she'd choose him over solving her mom's murder. But even though, they still catch the sniper that shot her. Kate and Rick make out now that they both know they love each other. Her sniper is put on trial and season 5 will start with him on trial.

Nothing will happen and you will only solve new cases have
There will be a new season fourth. As Marlowe can not do anything that comes from ABC ,unfortunately.
