TVLine: Adam Baldwin Previews His Castle Visit

Rick Castle is about to get Slaughtered.

In this Monday’s episode of Castle (ABC, 10/9c), Nathan Fillion’s novelist will dive head first – for better or for worse – into a storyline with a rough, tough and gruff NYPD detective named Ethan Slaughter and played by Adam Baldwin.

And while the episode obviously offers the geeky thrill of a reunion between the onetime stars of Firefly (where Fillion played Capt. Mal Reynolds to Baldwin’s Jayne Cobb), it will also serve a larger purpose, as the ABC hit closes in on its “very emotional” Season 4 finale (airing May 7).

Still processing the discovery that Kate remembers her shooting and the aftermath, “Castle is trying to figure out how he feels about Beckett,” series creator Andrew W. Marlowe tells TVLine. “He feels likes he’s a bit uninspired by her because of all this stuff that’s going on, but he hasn’t articulated that yet. So when he sees this larger-than-life cop figure on the news, he thinks, ‘Maybe I just need a new muse?’”

And make no mistake, Slaughter as a decidedly different muse will amuse. “He takes Castle on quite the ride,” says Marlowe. “Maybe it’s the most exciting case of his life, or maybe it’s, ‘The grass is always greener.’ That’s the journey he goes on.”

  1. So rude sexual comments from slaughter are to be expected and we'll be getting some minor firefly references. If we get some caskett movement we'll be on the right track.

  2. All I want is some Caskett progress. I don't ask for much but man...something.

  3. Not sure if I'm going to enjoy or even understand this episode. Firefly was never my thing, so I won't get the references. Hope it's just a few and not lots of that.

More angst in this episode...as much as I'm happy secrets are coming out, I really am not enjoying that last it of this season. It's too annoying watching castle be his old self and watching Beckett be completely blur. Anyway I just want to see the finale, the in between I'm assuming will be like Limey...just fillers.

    1. I think you need to look up what fillers mean.
47 Seconds and The Limey and the last few episodes remaining are part of an arc dirctly related to the Caskett ship.

Just because it's a difficult time for Caskett that doesn't mean these are filler episodes.

    2. I agree about firefly. Never watched it, so I think I won't get the hints of it or references, but I hope it isn't much so we can still enjoy it. And yeah it's becoming so difficult to watch, I wish they would settle this and move on. Must the angst be for 5 episodes? Good lord...it's becoming painful to watch...just my thoughts. I want to enjoy what little is left of this season and the past few have not been enjoyable. Actually more like completely frustrating. I'm glad her secret is out, it I would rather they have a huge fight and not talk for a few eps, than this stupid hiding and pretending stuff. Castle is just turning into some idiot and Beckett is moping around because she doesn't know what's wrong. Sorry not entertaining to me. So I get why some would just rather watch the finale when we actually get answers. Watching 4 eps wi no resolution or answers just puts me off.

      Delete
    3. it's the damn delay, if ABC gave us an episode every week the angst wouldn't be so bad. when the DVD comes out i think this will be a lot more palatable than it's been. If Headhunters resolves something it will be good if it doesn't ABC are idiots for making Castle fans wait.

  4. I picture a conversation between Slaughter and Beckett happening like this (maybe in a break room):

Slaughter: So you and Castle, are you guys an item?
Beckett: I'm sorry? I don't recall the moment we became acquaintances.
Slaughter: Well he won't stop mentioning your name. Beckett this, Beckett that. For a broken-hearted man, you'd think he'd try to stop talking about the woman who broke his heart.
Beckett: What? What are you talking about?
Slaughter: Well I maybe a bad-ass cop, but that doesn't mean I can't tell when a man is hurting. Taking on dangerous activities, trying out things outside his comfort zone, that's a man that wants to be distracted, a man who's trying to get his mind off of some girl.
Beckett: Did he tell you this?
Slaughter: Not exactly, but it's written all over his face. So what happened? He told you he loved you but you turned him down?

And here Beckett will piece everything together, and start questioning that maybe Castle does know about her lie.

    1. That would be amazing.... I really hope Beckett knows that Castle knows that she knows that he told her he loved her (what a doozy) by the end of this episode. That would definitely be more progress to set up the finale..

      Delete
    2. I don't see that conversation happening at all. From what I've seen in the sneak peeks, Slaughter doesn't appear to be too intuitive when it comes to other people's feelings. I think it's more likely he'll make lewd comments about Beckett behind her back to Castle. He couldn't care less if she was with Castle, because he's the type of guy who only cares about himself.

    3. You're on the right track Anon 6.50 PM, with your thoughts about what Slaughter might say to Rick, as it is hinted on in the TV Line article, but it also says that Slaughter might say something in his own "colourful" way.

I think this experience, coupled with the fact that it sounds like Rick will get shot at, will make our resident mystery-writer slam on the brakes hard and take stock of everything that's happened over the last four years. He is obviously still trying to prove to mainly himself that he can turn off the love switch and move on. It seems like he is going to realize by the end of this episode that he just can't turn off the love switch no matter how hard he tries. This will leave him in the right head-space for Kate to finally come out of hiding and admit her feelings to him. I don't know if the "L" word will come out of her mouth in this episode, it'll be more likely to be an apology for keeping him at arm's length for so long, leading to a truce between them in Undead Again. I think that she will finally use the "L" word in the finale at some point.

  5. I cannot think of any other reason why Castle would punch him.... Except this little problem called Beckett!!

I think Slaughter would make crude sexually graphic remaks about Beckett.... and if we are lucky THAT would also be that exact moment when Castle realizes, his feelings are FAR.... From over! They are burning like a brushfire!!!

I think he will get hurt at the end of the episode, I am inclined to hope that Kate will make the descision to tell him how she feels by the end as well....except I wonder how it will go down, I suspect it will be dragged to the finale.... Marlowe did say that she will reveal at the WORST possible moment.... Discovery of HIS secret.... Which leads me to believe that maybe she tell him at the beginning of Always???

    Any thoughts???

And that water cooler convo between slaughter and beckett, if it happened Anon.... Priceless!!

  6. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two weeks was too long :(

    1. In this episode? I really doubt that. Besides, I think Kate is going to take Castle's secret much better than he's taking hers when she does find out about it.

  9. That Baldwin actor looks scary. And he seems like a bigger jackass than castle. Let's see how this turns out. Hope firefly references are just a few. Sorry firefly fans, but I won't get those and I want to enjoy the show for what it is. Not referencing to another old show.

    1. I agree with you on the firefly thing. The stupid fans at Paley Fest have already used up my allotted patience for firefly references this season. Having Adam Baldwin there is homage enough- I hope they don't take it too far.

      Delete
    2. Agree...not saying all are like that, but there are a bunch of firefly fans who go on and on about that show when it ended like a million years ago. Time to move on.

Hahaha, yeah the paley thing was silly. I mean it's kind of weird when the obsession gets out of hand on a show that ended after just one season. And I mean this for any show that has ended, not just firefly. I actually laughed at that girl, because she looked dumb standing there talking about firefly when it was a castle event. And she looked like an adult, wonder why she was acting like a child.

      Delete
    3. Not only did that girl make herself look like a fool, she managed to alienate the rest of the cast in doing so. I also think it's incredibly disrespectful to Marlowe to go crazy about a different show at a freaking CASTLE panel. I'm not saying all Firefly fans are like this, but a lot of them are.

      Delete
    4. Agree with you guys. I'm sure firefly was a nice show, but that was then, and this is castle...very different, so please just stick to castle, and not going on about Adam Baldwin and Nathan together again. He is just another guest star, no big deal. I really hope there isn't too many of the references. I actually groaned with annoyance when I read that Adam will be in this one. Because I know how some firefly fans can get.

      Delete
    5. Well, for once I think "that girl" managed to ask one of the best questions after "making herself look like a fool".. Second, no matter whether there are many or only a few references, you won't even know, so what do you care? I get it that this is Castle, which I love, and I'm not exactly what you'd call a Firefly fan, but these comments seem ridiculous. They sound like a baby not wanting to share their toys.

  10. I think this will be least liked episode, I just don't like Adam Baldwin. So yeah definitely not my episode. But I'm sure some of you will love it. I will be skipping it since its them working with others again, so nothing much will happen. It's a filler episode. Looking forward to the zombies episode. Looks cool.

  11. You know my first thought when I heard Adam Baldwin was guest staring was...oh man, the firefly fans are going to go overboard with this. I mean don't get me wrong, I respect all fans of castle, but sometimes, the incessant talk about Nathan in firefly is annoying. Ok yes he was in the show, and it didn't work out, so he moved on to a better show, one that has made him tenfolds more famous than he ever was when in firefly. I'm one of those who never heard of Nathan until castle. In fact I thought he was a new actor...hehe. But whatever, just hope the episode still feels like castle and not some show I never saw and I don't understand what references they are making. Sorry no offense to firefly fans, but you have to agree some of you still talk about that show when it has nothing to do with castle. The paley conference was proof of that. Which in my opinion was disrespectful to the others there.

    1. Lol. Me too. I've never heard of Nathan until Castle. I saw him in Desperate Housewives but never really care enough (although I thought he was very very good looking there) to look him up. Was never into Firefly either. But, I was a Chuck fanatic so I definitely got the reference from the promo ("That was awesome!"). Though, I was never a "Casey" fan, thought his acting was a bit stiff for my taste.

I'm sure the episode won't be like hitting over our heads with firefly references (like back in season two where Castle dressed as a space cowboy). I'm looking forward for a new Castle episode, AND most importantly, some more movement on the Caskett front.

      Delete
    2. Agreed. I hope this episode of Castle isn't compromised for a bunch of firefly references. It's one of the last episodes this season, and we deserve to see Castle at it's best.

  13. For those of you complaining about Firefly references- there have been lots before and no one has said anything about them being 'too confusing.' If you don't get them, so what? Not like the episode will be ruined.

To be honest those of you who are whining about Firefly fans are more annoying than most of the actual Firefly fans! It was a great show, and yes I agree some fans take it too far but it deserves the credit, just like other shows that 'ended a million years ago.' (x files, Buffy, arrested development) Just because it's over, doesn't mean people have to forget it ever existed or not miss it just because YOU haven't seen it lol.

In fact, Nathan was a lot better in Firefly than in Castle. He's even said before that it was the best role he's ever had. That said, I like the show Castle more, but mostly because of Beckett. But Firefly was still great.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this is what some of them meant when they said firefly fans will take things overboard sometimes.

And though I agree that x files was another great show, the fans of that show don't really comment the way the firefly fans do. And yes I'm a firefly fans too, but I do get what some people say about them. They can be annoying. I wouldn't say Nathan was better there, he was different. Well best role he had or not, he didn't get wher he is now because of firefly. Hope he knows that. I love the guy, but I believe that you should appreciate what you have instead of living in the past.

Overall I think he is a nice guy, but personally that's one thing I don't enjoy about his interviews, it's skewed to firefly stuff and he hardly talks about his castle character. Makes me think he isn't invested, which is sad because he is enjoying his popularity now because of the hit that castle is. And I feel it's a little disrespectful to Marlowe, when he talks more about firefly than castle. And this is from a firefly fan. It's just my opinion.

With regards to this episode, I think it will be fun, but I'm impatient for the finale. Wish they would just skip headhunters and zombies.

      Delete
    2. I agree, Anon 10:14. I've seen Firefly, and it is a good show, but I still feel like Nathan leans on it too much for a fan base. Sorry man, but "the best role you ever had" only lasted for one season, whereas Castle has lasted 4 seasons, with a 5th due this fall. It's time to let it go.

      Delete
    3. Chuck cast also suffered from the Firefly fever whenever there is a convention, because of Adam Baldwin. The most famous fan question was something alone the line "who's more badass, Jayne (from Firefly) or Casey (from Chuck)? Ugh. It's one thing to get comments about an old show once in a while, but to have questions after questions about it in a event that is for a totally different show (and use up valuable time, when they should be asking relevant question to the current show) is really annoying and tiresome.

But with that said, the media usually reference firefly as the actor credit, so it has some buzzing weight. So I don't blame Castle, the show, giving firefly fans the nods.

      Delete
    4. I realize that an episode guest starring Adam Baldwin is bound to have some firefly references. That's fine, as long as they don't take it too far. I think that Anon 11:10 is right- Nathan still leans on firefly for fans, but I don't want Castle to do the same. It's a great show on it's own, and they don't need to resort to gimmicks to keep a fraction of viewers happy. I understand some of the references- like the brown coat thing- because some Castle viewers obsess over things like that. Having never watched Firefly, it feels like an inside joke that I'm not in on. I just hope that this episode stays true to the Castle we know and love.

    5. Excuse me?? I'm offended now, specially by anon 10:14. Exactly how did Evelyn take things overboard?? So there can be 20 comments about how firefly fans are so ridiculous, how they need to get over it and how you don't care about it, but as soon as somebody writes what seems to me like a very moderated argument, she's taking things overboard? I'm not even a hardcore fan of the show, I thought it was great, but that was it. However, even though I do love Castle way more, I think this Firefly fans bashing is as lame as it gets.

  14. And the firefly fans start their defense...come on guys. Let's just talk about castle here ok.

  15. Dear Firefly Fans,

I respect the fact that due to Adam Baldwins presence in this episode, it is bound to be crawling with Firefly references. I'm cool with that, really. You guys have a right to fangirl over any old show starring the young, hot, incredibly sexy Nathan Fillion. My only request is that when you come to this blog at 11 Pm Monday night (and again the next morning, and then continuously throughout the rest of the week), we can discuss Castle for what it is, a current show starring the slightly older, but still hot and incredibly sexy Nathan Fillion... and a bunch of other people ;) Please, please let's not turn our Castle blog into a Firefly discussion thread! Oh, and let's not talk about Nathan's weight, either (not just firefly fans, but everyone in general.)

    Sincerely,

    A Devoted CASTLE fan

  16. The thing with Firefly is that it has Cult following. The show is getting new fans all the time through the buzz that still lingers around. So despite being so many years old it is still fresh in many peoples minds. Similar to the movies of the 80's such as E.T, Back to the future and star wars which has young fans who were not even born when the films were released. Therefore I can understand why people still get excited about that stuff.

Although I agree with the going overboard with references comments. It's nice when it's subtle so hopefully they will stick to that formula. Therefore it wont get in the way of the actual Castle storyline.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think we are going to get an episode cluttered with numerous Firefly references. There will be references in there but they will be subtle ones. In the TV Line article Andrew Marlowe stated that it was already great enough that they had Adam Baldwin on the show for the episode so they didn't need to overdo any references to Firefly they put in there.

  17. What's so strange is that I was a firefly fan too...loved it. And then castle came along, and I love that too...but I realized that some of my fellow firefly fans couldn't let go of that show, and kept making references or remarks about castle with regards to firefly. Wanting the same stars etc...even when Monty died, fans were asking them to cast a firefly actor as the new captain. That totally got to me. To be blunt, if you miss firefly so much, watch the DVDs, but there's a reason why it got cancelled. I didn't like how fans were trying to have that whole crossover thing. It's 2 different shows and genres. Anyway after that I went from being. A huge firefly fan to a completely ex firefly fan, because it was annoying to see some other firefly fans still harp on that show whilst discussing castle. I guess I'm probably the only one who loved it and now can't stand hearing about it. Strange. So yes, this episodes, wold have been enjoyable for me but not anymore. Hope I at least enjoy bits of it.

The moderator should have opened the episode discussion post by now. Now that I think about it ... would it even help?!

    2. I never watched Firefly. I've been a fan of Nathan's since OLTL and have watched a lot of his projects but that one and it's in my Netflix que to watch.

That being said i'm so annoyed with the Castle fandom. I love the show, but its fanbase come across as so whiny and immature and sometimes even idiotic. I can't believe some fans aren't watching until the finale amd calling The Limey, Headhunters, and Undead Agaim filler episodes because Caskett are having issues. These issues will lead to a resolution. How the hell are the episodes dealing with these issues fillers?

I am embarrassed to read some of these comments from so-called fans. How can you judge a ship by skipping important arcs like the Demming arc and the Josh arc like some have. It's no wonder some of you don't get why the characters are behaving the way they are. You've skipped important parts of their story.

      I don't get it.

Firefly has been over for years, however, it's good buzz for Castle since even the media credits the cult following of the show along with Castle when promoting Nathan.

Get used to it or get over it because that's just the way it is.

I swear this blog must be full of teeny boppers. I'm looking for a more mature place to share my thoughts because I feel like i'm 10 when I come here.

    3. At anon 3.52, I partly agree with you, I will still watch the episodes even though I'm not a fan of angst like this. I hope others will too. But I can understand why some are not bothered to watch till the finale. You have to understand not everyone who watches the show are such big fans. Some just watch because there really is nothing better on Monday nights. Everyone watches for different reasons, so I'm not going to judge them.

As for the firefly thing, well I was never a fan of it, and I think Nathan is doing much better with this show, definitely his popularity gain is from castle. I don't agree that the media credits firefly when promoting Nathan, at least not anymore. And even if they did, Its most likely only in united states. I think Nathan is a good enough actor to stand on his own, and he shouldn't feel the need to drag up an old show to get more fans. Hope that's not what he does.

So just let fans who want to complain, complain. It's their opinion. No need to get upset about it. Well when it comes to being frustrated, people in general will act like their 10, why are you surprised. I mean just take a look at Rick castle at the moment. Annoying as hell, but that's life. So just let everyone give their thoughts.

  23. Thank you Anon @ 3:52am.

I'm looking forward to this ep. I think I'll enjoy it more than the Limey, which, while it served a purpose in the arc, was still filled with a few choices from TPTB that I didn't wholly agree with or enjoy. Just IMO.

This one looks like it will be better because it has the characters not being so passive-agressive. Beckett's talking to her therapist. Castle's doing his best to co-exist with his as-yet unrequited feelings for Beckett, and getting himself into a whole heap of trouble for the effort.

The Firefly stuff is just a bonus. I didn't see the show when it was on. I discovered Nathan thru HALO and Dr. Horrible. And then I discovered Joss Whedon. And that combo is why I went in search of Firefly and Serenity.

Any references are not likely to be over the top; Baldwin has said as much. I don't think folks should get their noses out of joint because people are excited to see two old friends work together onscreen.

They were excited to do it, the show was excited to write a role suitable for a Castle ep and not at the expense of it, and the guest appearance didn't go ahead until that was the case.

If the show is enthusiastic, and (some) fans are enthusiastic, then so much the better. The sense of ownership from some fandom corners can occasionally be a little distasteful, IMO.

Given how down some folks have been about the direction the Caskett arc has taken the past few eps, I think any enthusiasm from any quarter should be a welcome antidote. Enjoy the show any way you can. Why not. It's why we watch, no?

Besides, there have been references to other shows the other cast members have worked on too, little hints and nods. Castle has always been a Meta show, with vampires, dancing, protesting, soap operas, books and movies within television, RL product spin-off, yada. So why should having Balwin on throw anyone.

If ya don't like him, or his other shows, so be it. Enjoy him as Det. Slaughter on Castle.

If Slaughter's a jackass who gets Castle hurt, mebbe he's still viewable as someone who prompts Castle to take stock of things, in context of the show and the ongoing arc,and therefore still a useful character.

Glass half-full, people. Give it a shot.
