Matt's Inside Line - 12/22/11

Castle | The more we hear about the ABC drama’s 1940s-set noir episode, the more killer-diller it sounds. Thus far we knew that Castle’s retro alter ego is a Sam Spade type, while Beckett transforms into a gangster’s moll – specifically, the arm candy of a crooked club owner played by Mark Pellegrino (Supernatural, The Closer). “Stana [Katic] looked fantastic,” Pellegrino told me of the costumed shoot. “I mean, she was dressed to kill.” Not that the fellas were slouches. “I loved being in those double-breasted suits, the pinstripes, hair slicked back…,” Pellegrino raved. “It was definitely a great thing.” Summing up his character, Pellegrino says that whereas Nathan Fillion made like Spade (“And he was so good at it”), he himself channeled James Cagney, rat-a-tat speech patterns and all. And though Beckett may be his gangster’s gal, Pellegrino says the brunette beauty’s angsty chemistry with Castle’s ’40s sleuth “mimics” what the duo share back at the NYPD.

Mega Buzz - 12/20/11

Please tell me Castle and Beckett will still be in a good place when the show returns in January? —Anna

ADAM:
They'll be in a good place, but maybe not for long. When a dead woman ends up in the mayor's car, Beckett will find herself afraid of pursuing the most obvious suspect. "The stakes are enormous," creator Andrew W. Marlowe tells us. "If something happens to the mayor, Castle is not going to be able to continue his partnership with Beckett. How do you deal with an investigation when you're compromised because of the way you feel?"

Veteran Director Chuck Bowman Joins Castle

Castle fans are more than a little familiar with executive producer Rob Bowman who has directed some of the most loved episodes of Castle over the past four seasons. What some people may not realize is that Bowman comes from a family background firmly established in the industry with his father Chuck Bowman having worked on many television series over the years including The Greatest American Hero, Stingray, MacGyver, Dr Quinn Medicine Woman and many more.

When we heard Chuck Bowman was to direct an upcoming episode of Castle we thought it was worth bringing to your attention. The episode, scheduled to be aired some time in February, is titled The Blue Butterfly and is written by Terence Paul Winter (Castle’s The Third Man, Cops and Robbers).

The episode steps aside from the traditional Castle format and takes us back the 1940s era with a film noir feel.

“We flash back to the 1940s and all of the Castle gang take on various stereotypes of the 40s film noir genre,” says Stana Katic, “Everybody’s looking forward to getting their accents and film noir on.” Castle will be suited up as a “Sam Spade” type PI and Beckett as a gangster’s moll.

Mark Pellegrino (Lost, Supernatural) has been cast as Tom Dempsey, a ruthless club owner from 1947 who has it out for our somewhat out of character duo and who is potentially connected to a murder the 12th precinct are investigating in the present day.

Mega Buzz - 12/13/11

So excited to hear that Jennifer Beals is coming to Castle. What else can you tell me about the two-parter? — Eliot

ADAM: Beals plays Sophia, a CIA operative who's in town to capture a former Navy Seal who has gone rogue. (He's taken to abducting young women.) As you might expect, a bit of a turf war between the CIA and the NYPD will ensue, but that's nothing compared to the tension between Sophia and Beckett, who learn that they have a lot in common. (Think Nikki Heat.)

Castle is Headed for a Wedding

When ABC’s Castle returns with fresh episodes on Monday, Jan. 9, the first episode back will feature the wedding of Detective Kevin Ryan to the lovely Jenny Duffy-O’Malley. But will the undeniable romance of the big day spill over into the long-simmering but oft-stifled Castle/Beckett relationship, and maybe light a fire under those two?

For starters, Stana Katic tells us this much: Romance was in abundant supply during the filming of the episode, seeing as the fictional nuptials starred real-life marrieds Seamus and Juliana Dever, who play Kevin and Jenny.

“It was such a beautiful thing,” Beckett’s portrayer tells TVLine of shooting the ceremony. “I loved being able to see Juliana walk in with her wedding gown, because it was the kind of gown that she wanted when they were young actors getting married but they didn’t have the finances they needed to make the wedding as large as maybe it would have been in their dreams. This was a chance to kind of do a ‘second take,’ and it was fantastic to be a part of that real-life experience as well as that ‘movie-life’ experience.”

Wetpaint Exclusive: Andrew Marlowe on the Future of Castle and Beckett's Relationship: It Won't Just Be a ''Roll in the Hay''

Though Castle is a show that focuses on solving a murder every week there’s one aspect of the ABC hit series that is no mystery — the two leads sooo belong together.
In each episode since the very beginning, Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) and Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) have created enough sparks on screen to be charged with arson.
But after three and a half season, fans are still asking “will they or won’t they?” We took the question to creator and exec producer Andrew Marlowe, and what we found out should make Caskett fans very, very happy.
Wetpaint Entertainment: I know that Stana  is on Team “Get Them Together Already” and Nathan is for Team “Let Them Try To Get Together.” Have you picked a team?
Andrew Marlowe: I don’t believe in teams. I believe in really good storytelling. I think that there are really interesting stories to be told with these two. And the interesting stories take place while they’re apart trying to get together and after they’re together.
So to me it’s not a matter of "if," it’s a matter of "when." And then it’s a matter of consequences.
Once you’re in a relationship, you have to deal with the fact that you’re in a relationship. And that changes things radically and can make it really interesting.

Are you worried about bringing them together?
People talk about the curse of Moonlighting. I do not think that Moonlighting went off the air because they slept together, I think that show fell apart for a number of other reasons.
There are all sorts of ways of doing it. It’s all about keeping the audience compelled in the characters’ journey. And you can do that if they’re not in a relationship, if they are in a relationship, if they get into a relationship and something tests that relationship.
But I feel like the characters aren’t there yet. Beckett has some healing to do, Castle has some growing up to do. And we have to make sure that Castle doesn’t grow up at the expense of him having fun on the show.

Hold on to something, Castle fans: Another woman from Rick Castle's past is coming to town.

Sophia joins Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) in the search for a fellow CIA agent who has gone rogue and is now the key suspect in Castle and Beckett's murder case. But Beckett soon becomes distracted by the fact that Castle and Sophia have quite a complicated history.

Keck's Exclusives: First Look at Castle's Big Wedding

It's a definite déjà vu moment for Seamus Dever and his real-life wife, Juliana, when the couple say "I do" at the wedding of their characters, Kevin and Jenny, on the January 9 episode of ABC's Castle. "The budget's a lot bigger this time around," jokes Seamus. "And it's indoors," adds Juliana, "which is different from our first wedding, a Midsummer Night's Dream nature thing." Five years after that Sequoia National Forest gathering, Seamus and Juliana shot their fictional nups in an L.A. Presbyterian church built in the 1920s (check out the characters' wedding page at duffyomalleyandryan.ourwedding.com).

Wetpaint Exclusive: Juicy Castle Wedding Details From Andrew Marlowe

You’d think a wedding would be cause for celebration, but as anyone who’s planned one knows, it’s drama, drama, drama 'til the couple says “I do”!

The upcoming Castle wedding — which takes place in the first episode of 2012 — is no different.

In an exclusive interview with Wetpaint Entertainment, Castle creator and exec producer Andrew Marlowe tells us there’s an unexpected bump in the road for Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Jenny Duffy O’Malley (Dever’s real-life wife, Juliana Dever) as they head to the altar.

“I don’t see any reason why the Ryan/Jenny wedding wouldn’t take place … except for a revelation that we might find out in the middle of episode 11,” Marlowe teases. “But they’re good kids. I’m sure they’ll figure out how to deal with that.”

TV Guide: Beckett and Castle Get "Hooked Up" in "Cuffed"

Castle's Detective Kate Beckett has revealed a lot in her shrink's office this season.

In the Season 4 premiere, Beckett (Stana Katic) confessed that she remembered everything about her near-fatal shooting, thus revealing that she'd been lying to Castle (Nathan Fillion) about hearing him say, "I love you." But in the show's most recent episode, Beckett told her therapist (Michael Dorn) that she's ready to move past her mother's murder and be defined by a real relationship.

"She is moving towards trying to get some clarity in her life," creator Andrew W. Marlowe tells TVGuide.com of how far Beckett has come so far this season. "She is coming to an understanding about how deeply she is affected by all this stuff. ... She is starting to understand the reasons why she is driven to do the things that she is driven to do, and she wants to be able to push past that and take a step into a bigger world emotionally.

"Castle is not just a passing fancy or one-night stand for her," Marlowe continues. "So if she is going to jump in, she wants to make sure that she is ready to have the right kind of relationship. It is nice to see her moving in the right direction."

GMMR: Andrew Marlowe Talks ‘Cuffed,’ Beckett and Castle’s Relationship, His Dream Guest Star and More

In Monday’s brand new episode of CASTLE, Beckett and Castle wake up handcuffed together, locked in a room, all by themselves. Sounds like the perfect solution for those crazy kids to finally work out all the issues that have been plaguing them, right?

Alas, nothing is ever entirely that simple. There’s also the pesky matter of figuring out why they’re in their current predicament and how the heck they’re going to get out.

To try and get some teases about what the duo will be up to while they’re trapped together, I talked with CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe about “Cuffed,” those looming secrets hanging over Beckett and Castle, Ryan’s upcoming wedding and much, much more…

“Cuffed” puts Castle and Beckett in an interesting position, as they are literally chained together –
Andrew Marlowe: Literally handcuffed together!

How are they dealing with that close proximity, especially given all the secrets they’re keeping from each other?

AM: I think it puts us in a place where it’s really fun for us to watch the dance between the two of them. And when you’re handcuffed together, it’s both a literal and figurative dance. And putting them in that close proximity, I think some really fun things come out of it. It was a delicious episode to do.

We felt like with [having episodes] going to Atlantic City, dealing with the bank robbery and having something that was really focused on the Beckett character, that we needed something that really focused on the Beckett-Castle relationship exclusively and put them in a crucible where all the irrelevances were burned away and they had to deal with each other and the relationship.

Wetpaint Exclusive - Castle's Andrew Marlowe Previews ''Cuffed'': Expect Lots of ''Relationship Fun''

What a season it has been for Castle so far! From the moment we found out that Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) did hear the “I love you” uttered by Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) at the end of Season 3, and he made a decision to steer Beckett away from her mother’s murder case, we’ve been on pins and needles, waiting to see how it all plays out.

But if Beckett’s brave realization in episode 9, “Kill Shot”, that she is ready to deal with her emotions — and that means all of her emotions — doesn’t bring this crime-fighting, super sexy, can’t-they-already-be-a couple closer, we don’t know what can.

Actually, that’s not entirely true. Monday’s mid-season finale finds our heroes in a rather intimate and odd predicament — handcuffed and in bed together with no recollection of how they got there!

In an exclusive interview, creator and exec producer Andrew Marlowe tells Wetpaint Entertainment what to expect from the last episode of the year, and where he finds his inspiration for Caskett’s sexy banter.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Let’s set up the mid-season finale, “Cuffed." What can we expect?

Andrew Marlowe: “Cuffed” is a fun little gem of an episode that I think folks will enjoy. It features our two heroes handcuffed together, left hand to left hand, for the majority of the episode, trying to figure out why they’re cuffed together, where they are and what the hell is going on.

It’s a really fun mystery, but you can imagine that having Castle and Beckett cuffed together provides ample opportunities for banter fun and relationship fun for the two of them.

Matt's Inside Line: Dial M for Mayor

Castle | As you anxiously await the well-teased “Cuffed” fun coming on Monday, here is Stana Katic dishing on the following episode, in which Castle’s good friend, Mayor Weldon himself (now played by Damages‘ Derek Webster), is suspected of murder. “It’s a conflicted case for Beckett,” Katic said. “She knows that the mayor is valuable in keeping Castle in the precinct, but at the same time she doesn’t want anyone who’s committed murder to get away with it. She won’t compromise her sense of right and wrong.” Castle, meanwhile, understandably maintains the mayor’s innocence, creating friction in the squad room. “It’s his friend and he thinks he knows him,” says Katic, “so [Rick and Kate] will stand on two different sides of the line. But the case is a little bit greyer for Beckett than for Castle, and she has to figure out what to do with [the implicating] information.”
