We’re used to seeing Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) in all sorts of crazy danger on the ABC hit.
But on tonight’s episode of Castle Rick’s mom, Martha Rodgers (Susan Sullivan), finally gets into the action when mother and son are taken hostage during a bank robbery.
Since
we couldn’t wait till airtime to get all the details on “Cops &
Robbers,” we caught up with Susan herself to hear more.
In Part 1 of our exclusive Wetpaint Entertainment
interview, Susan tells us about the horrific event that happened to her
while filming the episode, who she wants to see play Castle’s dad, and
what she would tell Beckett if they ever had a heart-to-heart!
Wetpaint Entertainment: What was it like filming “Cops & Robbers”?
Susan Sullivan: Well,
you know, as an actor there are three things that you want to avoid:
courtroom scenes, weddings, and being a hostage in a bank.
Being a
hostage in a bank is not easy. It’s on the floor in uncomfortable
positions, constantly being nervous and scared and tense, so on that
level it was difficult.
But on another level it was really fun
because I don’t usually get to work with all these new actors. All of
these really wonderful actors came in and it’s really, I think, a good
episode. It was like a whole new family for a week.

Mega Buzz and Ask Ausiello - 11/29/11
I am so excited for the "Cuffed" episode of Castle. What can you tell me? —Erin
ADAM: Castle and Beckett, handcuffed on a bed together, with no recollection of how they got there — what could possibly go right wrong? As you might imagine, the duo finds themselves in a number of awkward — and suggestive —positions as they try to escape. At one point, Beckett even asks Castle to lift up her shirt. Rawr! (That sexist sound is also a hint.)

Question: OK, spill. Tell us everything you know about next week’s Castle episode that finds our favorite duo handcuffed in bed together! —Cheryl
Ausiello: I’m all tapped out on “Cuffed.” Sorry. As a consolation, here’s a scoop on the upcoming Kardashian-esque spoof starring Hilarie Burton and Justin Hartley: Nana Visitor of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Torchwood fame will play Dr. Phyllis Barker, an eminent canine therapist whose talents are called upon when it’s discovered that one of her “clients” witnessed a murder.

GMMR: Stana Katic Talks About the ‘Kill Shot’ Ending and Previews ‘Cuffed’
After seasons of struggling with her mother’s death, CASTLE’s Beckett finally made a conscious decision at the end of last week’s episode, “Kill Shot,” to try and start to let go of the case that has defined so much of who she has become. (Though, as regular CASTLE fans are well aware, Castle is secretly investigating her mother’s case on his own.)

Castle Flashes Back to the '40s
Executive producer Andrew Marlowe confirms a February sweeps installment will find Castle and Beckett imagining themselves in the 1940s, with Nathan Fillion suited up as a Sam Spade—type PI and Stana as a gangster’s moll.
Then in the spring, Castle and Beckett will trip the light fantastic in a Dancing With the Stars-themed episode timed to that show’s return.

How long before we see the effects of Beckett's most recent confession to her shrink on Castle? — Whitney
ADAM: Well, don't expect her to run straight into Castle's arms. After all, we're pretty sure that secret he's keeping from her will rear its ugly head at some point. But Stana Katic remains optimistic, despite the obstacles. "The more the characters grow, the more undeniable it will be that the two of them are just going to be together," she says. "It's a natural progression. It's not a matter of teasing the audience; it's just a matter of fully fleshing out the characters and [then] it'll just happen. It will have to."
Adam's Mega Rave: Stana Katic's PTSD performance in this week's Castle was impressive, but let's not overlook Jon Huertas. He was equally strong in the pivotal scene where Esposito helps Beckett face her fears. Plus: It's nice to see someone other than Castle get through to Beckett every once and a while.

Stana Explains Why Kill Shot Will Change Everything
Question: When is the only time that one ever wants to hear that a deranged sniper who is seemingly picking off innocent people at random is on the loose on the streets of New York City?
Answer: When said aforementioned crazed killer not only plays a pivotal role in the increasingly complicated love life of one Kate Beckett, but affords this TV Addict with the unique opportunity to chat one-on-one with her portrayer Stana Katic. Indeed, just to give you an indication as to just how pivotal tonight’s episode of CASTLE is, Ms. Katic took some time from chasing down bad guys to tease just what effect tonight’s episode, appropriately titled “Kill Shot,” may-or-may-not have on one Detective Beckett, who continues to struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder following May’s shocking shooting. See for yourself, after the jump.
Q. Now that you’re practically halfway through CASTLE’s fourth season did you ever imagine Beckett’s near death experience during Last May’s season finale would play such an integral role throughout it?
Stana: No. None. It’s nice to be able to play that character through-line and I was excited to see that they would keep some of the themes running through the season. But of course you know all of the writing and the trajectory of the characters is due to [CASTLE creator] Andrew Marlowe and his team of writers.
Q: Tonight’s episode sees Kate going to a really dark place. Do you enjoy these trips to the dark side, or do you prefer CASTLE’s less serious episodes?
Stana: I like them both. I like playing the romantic comedy which I think is the main thrust of the show but I also like delving into the reality of the characters because sometimes people are going through things and I like exploring that. I think what I would color this episode and this season is that it’s a richer season for the characters. We’re not as case heavy as we as character heavy and I think that’s what bring people to the show. The characters are all so interesting and spectacular in their own right.

Castle's Stana Katic: A Traumatic Case Will Bring Beckett a 'Huge Step Closer' to Being With Rick
This Monday on Castle (ABC, 10/9c), the manhunt for a New
York City sniper hits a bit too close to the heart for Beckett, who
almost instantly has memories of her own, near-fatal shooting jostled
anew.
Beckett being Beckett, she labors to put up a brave front. Meanwhile, team members unsuccessfully go out of their way to not utter the S-word — sniper — in front of her. But it only takes a startling squad car siren or a harrowing night terror to make her acknowledge that she’s still suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
In the gripping hour, titled “Kill Shot,” “We see a different Beckett,” Stana Katic tells TVLine. “We see somebody who’s not as in control as she has been in previous episodes. She’s dealing with something huge, something that a lot of people out there deal with – post-traumatic stress. And from what I’ve read and discussed with people, that is something that is a problem but is not necessarily talked about and not necessarily admitted to, because the people that get it are often people in authority who have to keep the ball rolling. There’s no time to be off your game.”

Castle's Stana Katic: Sniper Case Brings Castle and Beckett a Step Closer to a Relationship
For the first time on Castle, Beckett will lose control.
As a sniper rampages through New York, Beckett (Stana Katic) will be faced with memories of being in the cross hairs of a sniper and taking a bullet to the chest in the Season 3 finale. "It's the first time that she is not on top of her game," Katic tells TVGuide.com of Beckett's reaction to the new case. "It's the first time she's in a space of pure fear, and it's unusual for her and she doesn't know how to handle it."
Not used to weakness, Beckett will attempt to push her PTSD aside in hopes of willing herself back to normal. "For a character who's so used to being in control of a situation, it's like, 'OK, I don't have time for this. What do I need to do to get past this and get back on the case?' She is so used to being at the forefront of any investigation and is New York's superhero, basically. There's no time for weakness, especially now. She has to work through this and it's a tough one."

TV Fanatic: Castle and Beckett to Move "One Step Closer" This Monday
Set your DVR to "Save Until I Delete" status for this Monday's Castle episode, fans. It's an episode not to be missed.
Titled "Kill Shot" and previewed in this video, the episode will center around a sniper on the loose in NYC, an eerie call back for Beckett to the events from May's finale in which she was gunned down.
"It brings up dormant issues of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for her," Stana Katic told me this morning. "It's something she's never experienced before because she's always so in control and, in this case, she doesn't have a clear handle on what to do."

Latest from EW
Sandra, I am expecting some great Castle scoop this week. I am sure you are one of the ultra lucky people in the world who got to see “Kill Shot” early? What can you you tell us about it? How does it rate against your favorites of the season? While I hear there will be moments that might have us in tears, will there be moments that cause for an eruption of shippers’ smiles? — Cheryl
One at a time, Cheryl! To simplify things, I’ll take your questions in order: 1) Yes I did. 2) I did you one better. I showed you something from it this morning. 3) Rates near the top, but possibly below the bank (because that’s always going to be tough to beat) 4) Like I said, Castle comforts her…but definitely in his own way. I much preferred Castle’s scenes watching Beckett rather than with her. You’ll see what I mean.
------------------------------
Sandra! Biggest fan = moi. Pleasantries aside, will the wonderful folks over at Castle be giving the fans an early Christmas present this year?? No mistletoe needed, if you catch my drift (and I am sure you do). Raleigh loves ya. — Kelly
I do know what you mean. Ha. But nothing like that in “Kill Shot.” I think the real gift of the episode is a lesson in how to love someone rather than how to show it physically. Does that make sense? We’ll talk more on Monday.
------------------------------
So is it safe to say Stana Katic [deserves] all of the awards for this ep? How about some Caskett scoop? The wait for “Kill Shot “is too long. — @martucacomayuca
Yes, it is safe to say she’s rather award-worthy, specifically for a few of the scenes teased in the preview, like the crying scene in the hallway and the drunk Beckett scene!

TVOvermind: 6 Things You Need To Know About 4.09 "Kill Shot"
I know the excitement about this Castle episode is reaching
an insurmountable high and your expectations are most likely through the
roof. Trust me, mine were too before ABC released a screener for the
press to review yesterday. I tried watching it last night, but I had my
two nieces with me (the oldest is 6 and the youngest is 3) and they were
demanding my attention while I was trying to watch it. So basically the
only thing I took from watching bits and pieces of that episode last
night was that Stana Katic was brilliant.
Tonight, I finally got some free time to sit down and watch it properly with no interruptions and let me tell you, "Kill Shot" is amazing. It is right up there with "Knockout" and "Cops & Robbers". That said, we should get something out of the way so the shippers won't expect too much. It is not a shipper episode. It is all about Detective Kate Beckett in "Kill Shot" and you know what? It was much, much better this way because with everything she had going on, adding a romantic conflict would just break the poor girl.

Castle | No sooner did I hear that the screener for the next new episode was available did I lunge for the play button. As you may know, “Kill Shot” revolves around a sniper who is picking off “random” civilians — and as you can imagine, the case has a profound affect on Beckett, who found herself on the business end of a long-range rifle in the Season 3 finale. On Monday I’ll have a full-on Q&A with Stana Katic, but for now rest assured that she brings it, quick, often and heart-wrenchingly, as Kate’s memories are jostled anew. (Expect waterworks on both sides of your TV screen.) You’ll see a lot of her scar and her shrink (whom she hightails it to after one big breakdown). Jon Huertas also shines in the episode, as Esposito, a sniper himself, tried to help Beckett stand up to her demons. On the lighter side, Alexis’ smarts help dig up a clue about the killer, and you’ll hear of a “new man” in Kate’s life. His name is Roger and, she effuses, he has “the most incredible [spoiler]“!

Ask the Addict: Kill Shot Spoilers
With Monday's episode of CASTLE entitled "Kill Shot" I'm slightly concerned that one of my favorite members of the NYPD will find themselves on the wrong end of a sniper's sight. Any chance I might trouble you to alleviate that concern? - Kelly

What we will do is let fill you in on a little secret: The insanity surrounding Monday's fantastic episode of CASTLE won’t be for naught. The TV Addict: While Beckett's increased moments of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) definitely take center stage in an episode that has 'For Your Emmy Consideration' written all over it in terms of Stana Katic's stellar performance, fans of both Alexis (Molly Quinn) and Esposito (Jon Huertas) will be pleased to discover that both play an integral role in the hunt for the killer.

Ask Ausiello - 11/15/11
Question: I am a loyal follower and this is the first time I
have asked for scoop! Do you have anything about the Nov. 28 episode of Castle entitled “Cuffed”? Specifically, how do Beckett and Castle get handcuffed together in the first place? —Lauren
Ausiello: Good question. So good that I went directly to series creator Andrew W. Marlowe for the answer. He said, “Fans should be very curious as to why Beckett and Castle are handcuffed together” — and they’re not alone in that. “I think Beckett and Castle are very curious as to why they are cuffed together, and wonder why they can’t remember exactly how it happened.”
Question: Waiting for a new episode of Castle is killing me! I need spoilers, Aus! —Ivy
Ausiello: Sounds like Castle is about lampoon — or pay homage to? — Kim “72 Days” Kardashian. The show is casting the role of Kay Cappuccio, a charismatic reality-TV star “who has achieved significant fame and fortune without possessing any discernible skill or talent” and whose “knockout body have made her a favorite of tabloids and gossip sites the world over — one of which has placed a huge bounty on her booty.” It’s totes KK, right? That’s what I thought, until I read the last sentence of the character descrip: “Kay both relishes this spotlight and at the same time feels like a prisoner of her own celebrity lifestyle — the result is a woman who is more complex than she might at first seem.” Complex?! Kim? Um, no, I think I had a cactus once that demonstrated greater depth than she ever has. And it had a bigger vocabulary, too.

GMMR: CASTLE Recasts the Mayor
Castle has long used his friendship with the mayor to get what he wants, but when the mayor reappears on CASTLE in an upcoming episode, he’s going to look a little different than fans remembered – ABC has confirmed to Give Me My Remote that Derek Webster will take over the role from Joseph C. Phillips. (Phillips appeared twice in the show’s first season.) TVLine was first to report the casting change.

TV Line Exclusive: Recasting Alert!
Castle has elected a new mayor.
Damages‘ Derek Webster is taking over the role of Robert Weldon, the show’s (fictional) New York City Mayor, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively.
He replaces General Hospital grad Joseph C. Phillips, who previously played the Big Apple’s top politico in two Season 1 episodes.
The role will be beefed up considerably under Webster (who also starred in the short-lived Fox drama Mental). For starters, producers are mining the character’s pivotal backstory — namely his longstanding friendship with Castle (Nathan Fillion) — in a major way.
As you know, it was Weldon’s political clout that allowed Castle to partner up with Beckett in the first place. But when a woman is found dead in a car that traces back to the Mayor’s motor pool, that partnership comes under fire as the scandal surrounding the investigation threatens to bring down Weldon’s administration.
Webster’s term in office is slated to begin in early ’12.

EW Spoiler Room - 11/11/11
Hi Sandra. First time submitter but long time follower of the
Spoiler Room, it keeps me tide over between episodes. Anyhoo, my spoiler
request is in regards to Castle; given the number of scars I
have, I’m a firm believer of “Scars are like tattoos, but with better
stories,” but Beckett got shot…in the chest…and then had said chest
sliced open to fix the damage, so fans all know she’s hiding a doozy of a
scar. Given the discomfort Beckett most likely feels/will feel having a
second party see her scar, or the feelings of guilt it’s going to bring
up for Castle were he to see it, is Marlowe & Co going to either a)
Further address the issue of Beckett’s scar (beyond what was dropped in
04×04), or b) actually give Castle a glimpse of it? I mean just
imagining possibilities with that potential moment would be enough for
it to jump on your Top 5 Favorite Casket Moments, Sandra! Cheers. –
Evelyn
Next week’s episode, “Kill Shot,” which finds Beckett going through a lot of emotional turmoil (as you could have guessed from the preview) would be the perfect time to address the scar, right? Well, the good news is, if it doesn’t end up on the cutting room floor for some reason, I believe you will see it next week.
Hope you are healing up nicely! I too have been a victim of my own clumsiness, and know that it is no fun. So I hope you get well soon!
Anyway, it’s official; I am a Castle
junkie! How am I to get through two whole weeks without a new
episode?! Especially since the next episode, “Kill Shot,” looks
incredible! Any hope that Beckett will let Castle comfort her? That may
get me through until the 21st. Thanks! — Alyssa Manwill (huge Castle fan from Oregon)
Thank you, Alyssa! I’m healing well from my troubling tumble. (To be fair, it was worth it because I made it home in time for Supernatural. But I will never again run in heels to do so. DVR will always have my back.) Oh, right. You had a question. While I can’t tell you too much, I can say that Stana Katic has a lot to be proud of in this episode, and Beckett and Castle have always been, if anything, emotionally supportive of one another. I gather we won’t be disappointed.

Mega Buzz - 11/8/11
Have you heard anything else about that Castle case involving the dirty politician? — Philip
ADAM: Think Spitzer. The politician in question is the mayor and he finds himself implicated in the murder of a woman who had just met with an agent to discuss an explosive book deal. The likely topic of the book: the mayor's penchant for employing a service known as "Dial-a-Goddess." (Wonder what Castle will think of his buddy when this comes out?)

Inside TV: Tamala Jones on what's next for Lanie and Esposito. Plus, dish on January's 'phenomenal' wedding episode!
When Lanie and Esposito (Jon Huertas) broke off their relationship last month, it became clear, as Castle‘s
Tamala Jones puts it, that the “honeymoon phase is over” between the
two once-smitten lovers. But there’s hope on the horizon for the pair,
she says.
“She’s got a wall up but I think that Esposito is breaking her down at this point, and you’re going to see a little bit of that [this] week,” says Jones. “She’s going to come clean about how she truly feels about him…but I definitely don’t think Lanie is done with Esposito.”

Wetpaint Exclusive! Susan Sullivan Talks Castle Season 4 and the "Adorable" Nathan Fillion
Just in time for tonight’s new episode of Castle, we’ve got more exclusive Susan Sullivan goodness for you! In Part 2 of our Wetpaint Entertainment interview, Susan — who plays Castle’s mom Martha Rodgers on the ABC hit — tells us what the mischievous Nathan Fillion’s
been up to on the set and where her character is heading this season.
Plus, we do our best to convince her to get a Twitter account already!
Wetpaint Entertainment: What has Nathan been up to prank-wise?
Susan Sullivan: Nathan’s like a little imp. Or a big imp in Nathan’s case. I just finished an episode that airs on Monday where I was with Nathan every day five days in a row, which is the first time on this series where I have done that with him. I was a hostage in the bank, so we spent 12 to 13 to 14 hours together five days in a row. And he was completely adorable with everybody. All these actors were hostages in the bank and we were sitting on the floor so it was kind of a nightmare, but we would tell jokes and entertain people and keep everybody’s spirits up. He was adorable.
And then I had a terrible car accident on the way home at one o’clock in the morning one night, and actually hit another member of the crew on the freeway. So the next day they gave us a cake because we survived. And they gave me a pair of glasses so that I would see better at night and not bump into anybody. I hit him and they gave him a neck brace. That was Nathan’s idea.

THR's Q&A with Stana Katic
The tide is shifting. With novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and NYPD detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) experiencing heightened stakes thus far this season on ABC's Castle,
the former in last week's explosive bank heist-turned-hostage situation
and the latter suffering a near-fatal gunshot wound, the two unlikely
partners find themselves in a bit of a predicament. (And of course, the
ongoing murder investigation of Beckett's mother.)
After more than three seasons of tension-filled gazes, uncomfortable moments and surprising revelations, Castle and Beckett just may be venturing on the right path to romance -- for the moment, at least.
"Both of them are trying to protect each other but they are missing out on the opportunity to be in a relationship together, which they both want," Katic shared with The Hollywood Reporter. Whether that happens any time in the near future remains a mystery, for now. Katic, a supporter of The Alternative Travel Project which challenges individuals to go car-free for one day, took some time to chat with THR about the aftermath of the hostage crisis, whether Beckett is warming to Gates, a wedding and Beckett's upcoming struggles.
The Hollywood Reporter: The hostage episode was a big one for Castle and Beckett. Where are they at in terms of their relationship?
Stana Katic: We got a chance to see how deeply Beckett cares about Castle. It was a moment that shined, especially at the end of the hostage episode. This is one of the first episodes ever where Castle is the one in danger and Beckett is his hero coming to save him. We've had so many episodes where in the course of her journey to resolve her mother's murder, she's been in danger and he's been the one to come to her aid. This was a moment to show the other side of that relationship in that she cares for him just as much as he cares for her.

Ask Ausiello - 11/1/11
Question: I’ve got a bunch of Halloween candy leftover. Trade you for some Castle scoop? —Ivy
Ausiello: Castle and Beckett spend an upcoming episode literally handcuffed together.
Question: Longtime reader, first-time question-asker. I was just wondering why Josh Hopkins was an “extra” cop on last week’s Castle. Was it just a cameo or is he planning on being in the show? —Erin
Ausiello: Get with the program, Erin. Or this will be your first and last question.

Wetpaint Castle Exclusive: Tamala Jones on Ryan's Wedding, Esplanie's Break-Up and Caskett's Relationship
Detective Kevin Ryan's (Seamus Dever) trip down the aisle should mean that at least one couple on Castle gets their happily ever after, but Tamala Jones, who plays medical examiner Lanie Parish, told Wetpaint Entertainment recently in Los Angeles that the big event is going to rattle more than a few people on the squad.
After their breakup in Season 3, Episode 6: “Demons,” it appears that Lanie and Esposito (Jon Huertas) are not exactly on the same page when it comes to who initiated their split.
“You’re going to see us pointing a finger at each other — ‘It’s your fault!’ — but there’s going to be some stuff happening at Ryan’s wedding,” said Tamala.
“I can’t tell you what it is, but it’s a must-see!”
