4x07 - Cops & Robbers - Discussion Post

Jim Halterman's Interview with "Castle" Creator Andrew W. Marlowe

Will they or won't they are the first questions that come to mind when thinking about ABC's crime drama "Castle" and the potential relationship between writer Richard Castle (played by Nathan Fillion) and detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). But, as creator/Executive Producer Andrew W. Marlowe told our Jim Halterman last week, he's not fearful of finally taking the leap and having the characters come together. That said, since past television series like 'Moonlighting' have crashed and burned after the leads coupled, would he see that moment as a 'jumping the shark?'

Marlowe may have kept mum during out chat about when that coupling might happen but he did say the twosome may already be in a relationship of sorts. He also made sure to tease what's to come with the various supporting characters and that there will also be plenty of 'shipper' moments in tonight's "Cops & Robbers" episode for those fans who tune in just as much for the romantic banter as the twists and turns in each week's case.

Jim Halterman: You were tweeting with fans recently about 'jumping the shark' so it made me wonder if you think finally getting Castle and Beckett together would be 'jumping the shark.'

Andrew W. Marlowe: No, I don't see it that way. Part of it is me having fun with the fans and some elements and some upcoming storytelling that I'm going to be coy about because I don't want to give away. Everybody talked about jumping the shark and I got curious and went back and looked at the 'Happy Days' materials and they ran for a really long time after they jumped the shark and that was very curious to me. We all accept by our popular definition that jumping the shark means that the series is basically over and it's a downward spiral but you can't spiral downward for six or seven years and still have folks responding to you.

It was my fun way of keeping communication with the fans and what exactly I mean by what people see down the line. I wasn't speaking specifically about the Beckett/Castle relationship but I also wasn't not speaking about that because, as I have said on record a number of times before, I think that we have a lot of storytelling after they're together as a couple. I've also said to people that 'Look, I already think they're in a relationship but it's a much more complicated relationship than we're used to seeing.' It's not as simple as 'We're together now and everything's great with the world.' We all know that relationships, when you're in them, are complicated and they don't always present what they actually are.

Susan Sullivan Interview with TV Line about Cops and Robbers

This Monday at 10/9c, ABC’s Castle meets The Nine (as a wise woman suggests below) when a seemingly standard-issue bank robbery is committed by a band of thieves named after famous TV doctors. Among the hostages are Rick and his mother Martha, while Beckett, a hostage negotiator (played by Breaking Bad‘s Dean Norris) and a worried Alexis fret over the captives’ fate from outside.

Susan Sullivan, who plays Martha, shared with TVLine a look at the episode that worked her so hard, it dealt her a real-life scare as well.

TVLINE | I’ve been excited to talk to you about this episode ever since [series creator] Andrew W. Marlowe told me about it in September. And the promos make it look crazy-intense.
Yeah, it is a crazy-intense episode — I know it almost killed me! I crashed my car on the way home [from the set]. I haven’t worked five days in a row, all day long, since this series began, so it was very, very intense.

TVLINE | Andrew said you spent almost the whole episode on the floor.
Yeah. Do you remember The Nine? It was like The Nine [on which Sullivan was a cast member]. As soon as I saw that script, I went, “Oh my god, I’m on the floor for five days, up and down, up and down,” so it was tricky. But aside from crashing my car, it was in an odd way fun. It’s the first time that I have worked with a bunch of new actors, because I am always with – and it is always delightful, believe me! – Nathan [Fillion] and Molly [Quinn] in the loft, in those big comfortable seats and not the hard floor of a bank. Part of what makes this show work is these [guest] actors coming in with their intensity. It’s really something.

Got any good Castle spoilers? — Melissa

ADAM:
Sounds like Beckett and Castle are going to have to tread lightly on an upcoming case. It concerns a politician who, despite being well-loved among his constituents, finds himself mixed up in a crime. Given what we know about Capt. Gates' desire to move up the ranks, we bet she'll be paying closer attention than ever to this case.

TVLine: Castle Scares Up a Ghost Story (and Some Always-Frightening Relationship Talk!)

This Monday at 10/9c, ABC’s Castle serves up a Halloween-themed treat when a renowned “ghost hunter” type is killed under legitimately spooky circumstances. As such, the far-out case prompts Beckett, Castle et al to disclose their individual opinions on the supernatural.

“What we’re dealing with is a murder inside an old, locked haunted mansion, where the only way somebody could have killed this guy was is if they were not of this world — if they were from the other side,” series creator Andrew W. Marlowe told TVLine when we visited the set during filming. “So we get to investigate and have a lot of fun with that.”

Being among the highly imaginative, Castle, as one might imagine, “believes that a ghost is behind the murder,” Stana Katic shared, “and Beckett doesn’t.”

Katic, though, teases with a big grin, “That doesn’t necessarily mean Beckett doesn’t believe in the supernatural, which I think is kinda cool.”

EW Spoiler Room - 10/21/11

How freaky was [the Halloween episode of Castle]? I’m hoping to get great comedic performances on this one… — @martucacomayuca

VERY freaky! In fact, as you reference in your tweet, I sort of creeped myself out by watching it late in the evening. That said, any minor creepy moments (yes, keep in mind I’m pretty easily spooked) are off-set by loads and loads of humor and some especially great Castle and Beckett banter as the two debate the existence of the paranormal. However, I warn you that not all the couples on this show will end the episode on great terms.

Are we going to see any more of Beckett’s PTSD this season? I feel like it’s just sort of been forgotten… — Sharon

Definitely not forgotten. C’mon, you know better than to think they’d do that! In fact, a set spy tells me an upcoming sniper case will find Beckett dealing with her PTSD in a big way. “It forces her to deal with her unresolved issues about her mother — and her own emotional choices,” says the source.

"Cops & Robbers" -- When Castle and Martha are taken hostage by a crew of bank robbers dressed in hospital scrubs and using classic television doctor names (Trapper John M.D., Dr. Huxtable, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and Dr. Doogie Howser), Beckett finds herself on the outside, desperately trying to rescue them -- which proves to be even more difficult with a by-the-book hostage negotiator (guest star Dean Norris, "Breaking Bad") watching her every move. Castle becomes the de facto leader of the hostages, which includes Barry Livingston ("My Three Sons"), and discovers that the robbery is actually a skillfully orchestrated distraction for an even more sinister plan. "Castle" stars Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, Stana Katic as NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers, Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle, Penny Johnson Jerald as NYPD Captain Victoria Gates, Tamala Jones as Medical Examiner Lanie Parish, Jon Huertas as NYPD Detective Javier Esposito, and Seamus Dever as NYPD Detective Kevin Ryan.

Tonight on Castle: 4x04 - Kick the Ballistics

Tonight, Castle will deliver an emotional episode featuring Detective Ryan's worst nightmare when his old service piece is found to be the murder weapon that killed their latest victim. "Kick the Ballistics" will bring back the 3XK storyline and the consequences of the fact that Jerry Tyson (aka The Triple Killer) took Ryan's badge and gun when he escaped right through our favorite team of detectives' fingers in early season 3.

Castle's creator, Andrew W. Marlowe, told TVLine that it is going to be a deeply emotional episode for Ryan - and for the whole team, I imagine. The fact that he will see a cop's worst nightmare come to life will just make Ryan work harder to solve this case.

“We did an interesting thing,” Dever reflects. “[Director] Rob Bowman didn’t want Ryan sort of wallowing in the fact, ‘Oh, this happened to me. Poor me.’ Instead, he wanted to activate Ryan to be a better cop, to do his job but even better than he ever has before.” As such, Ryan and the team work hard and fast to track down his weapon before it can be used again.

"Kick the Ballistics" is scheduled to air tonight, October 10th, at 10/9C on ABC.

TVLine's Castle Preview: A 'Deeply Emotional' Episode Explores a Cop's 'Worst Nightmare'

This week on ABC’s Castle (Monday, 10/9c), Detective Kevin Ryan gets blindsided by a blast from the past, when the gun the 3XK killer stole from him almost exactly a year ago resurfaces in the grimmest of ways – as the weapon used to kill a young woman.

“It’s a deeply emotional episode for Ryan,” series creator Andrew W. Marlowe shares with TVLine, explaining that such a deadly scenario is “the worst fear of any cop.”

Seamus Dever, who plays Ryan, concurs, telling us, “It is anyone‘s worst nightmare, that something that was your responsibility has now been used to kill somebody.”

Matt's Inside Line - 10/6/11

One of the big teases dropped at Comic-Con over the summer was this ABC hit’s plan to tackle the topic of Castle’s father. But that paternal exposition will come later rather than sooner. “We’re still in the process of breaking the story, but we are hoping to play with Castle’s fathers mythology this year, probably at midseason,” series creator Andrew W. Marlowe told me. The writers first wanted to let the Johanna Beckett thread from last season and this season’s opener simmer down a little. “After that really explosive season finale,” Marlowe explains, “the most important thing to me was be able to get the two characters back to the recognizable fun that people are used to seeing, but hopefully with a little more depth and meaning to all of their exchanges.”

When is the new captain going to ease up on Beckett on Castle? — Carrie

ADAM:
I wouldn't expect it to be anytime soon. Nor would Penny Johnson Jerald, who insists her character isn't being grumpy, but rather teaching Beckett how to excel in the male-dominated NYPD. "I think you could really put that into a category of tough love," she tells us. "You have to better than the best because you're a woman. I think she sees a little bit of herself in Beckett. So she wants Beckett to do it by the book so that Beckett isn't the reason for her own demise."

Marlowe recently told TVLine’s Matt Mitovich, referring to The Killing actress’ guest stint as a sexy art insurance investigator. “Anytime a very attractive woman has her eye on Castle, and with Castle being the kind of guy he is, it makes for some interesting sparks.”

Popular vote says you guys want to see a discussion post, so here it is. We'll test this out this week and see how it goes. Comment away!

CTV: Will Beckett admit her feelings to Castle? Stana Katic sure hopes so

There is no one who wants Kate Beckett to admit her feelings for Castle more than the Canadian-born actress who plays her, Stana Katic.

Katic's character, a NYPD Detective, got shot on the explosive Season 3 "Castle" finale, prompting mystery novelist Richard Castle (played by Edmonton native Nathan Fillion) to finally profess his love for her.

But on the Season 4 premiere, Beckett tells Castle from her hospital bed she doesn’t remember anything that happened between getting shot and waking up.

Katic, who hails from Hamilton, Ont., told CTV.ca it was a difficult scene to shoot, considering both she and her character knew it was a lie.

“In spite of me saying what I was saying to him, I was trying to tell him I cared for him and it was tough. It was a weird kind of duality,” she says with a laugh.

4x08 - Heartbreak Hotel - Synopsis and Casting News

‘Castle’ fans are still waiting to find out who will get to play the title character’s absentee father, but in the meantime, the show continues to draw great guest stars each episode (Mondays, 10PM ET on ABC).

AOL TV has just learned exclusively that a certain ‘Desperate Housewives’ alumnus will soon be stopping by.

Richard Burgi — whom Wisteria Lane fans remember as Susan’s (Teri Hatcher) ex Karl, the one who was engaged to Edie (Nicolette Sheridan) and then had an affair with Bree (Marcia Cross) before dying in a plane crash — will be popping up on ‘Castle’ for an episode this November.

They’re shooting the episode this week, but we’ve got early details on the episode and Burgi’s role.

Here’s the official description for episode #408, and a little bit more about Burgi’s character:

When a murder case takes Castle, Esposito and Ryan to Atlantic City — becoming half investigation and half bachelor party for Ryan — they question the casino co-owner (guest star Richard Burgi) in connection with the crime. Charlie Turner is the slick co-owner of The Sapphire Coast Resort and Casino in Atlantic City. When his long-time business partner is killed, Charlie grants the guys full access to his casino.
