Ask Ausiello - 9/27/11
Ausiello: At the time TVLine’s Matt Mitovich visited the Castle set this month, they were shooting the Halloweentime episode in which a “ghostbuster” is murdered while inside an empty, locked haunted house. So, who’s a believer and who isn’t? “Castle believes that a ghost is behind the murder, Beckett doesn’t,” Stana Katic told us. However, she was clear to point out, “That doesn’t necessarily mean that Beckett doesn’t believe in the supernatural, which I thought is kind of cool.”

4x04 - Kick the Ballistics - Press Release
"Kick the Ballistics" - While investigating the mysterious shooting death of a young woman, Castle and Beckett face a cop's worst nightmare when they discover that the gun used in the killing is Det. Ryan's old service weapon - the one that was stolen by the serial killer, 3XK. Now with the clock ticking, the team must work to solve the murder, track down 3XK and retrieve Ryan's gun before the killer strikes again, on "Castle," MONDAY, OCTOBER 10 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET sptv050769), on the ABC Television Network.
"Castle" stars Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, Stana Katic as NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers, Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle, Penny Johnson Jerald as NYPD Captain Victoria Gates, Tamala Jones as Medical Examiner Lanie Parish, Jon Huertas as NYPD Detective Javier Esposito, and Seamus Dever as NYPD Detective Kevin Ryan.
Guest Cast: Billy Lush as Finn McQueen, Ross McCall as Seth Carver, Francois Chau as Clifford Lee, Lanny Joon as Philip Lee, Tim Jo as Ben Lee.
"Kick the Ballistics" was written by Moira Kirland and directed by Rob Bowman.
Brief Look at Heroes & Villains
From the sneak peeks posted last week, we also know that this episode will be dealing with the fact that Alexis is excited about joining her boyfriend, Ashley, at Stanford - all the way across the country - as soon as possible. Castle is obviously not happy about that and I am willing to bet he will be struggling with this throughout the episode and will most likely seek Kate's advice on the matter.
"Heroes & Villains" will also feature the launch of Richard Castle's Deadly Storm, the official Castle graphic novel, which is already available for purchase.

TVLine: Castle's Stana Katic Opens Up About the Big Secrets and Kate Being Crazy In Love with Rick
Of course, the opener famously closed with Kate revealing to her shrink that she in fact does remember her shooting and the aftermath, meaning she knows full well how Rick feels about her. But how does she truly feel about him? And when did those emotions first bubble to the surface? During my visit to the Castle set, I sat down with Stana Katic to get inside Beckett’s head.
TVLINE | In your mind, was there a particular moment when Kate’s feelings for Rick crystallized, and she realized there could be something real between them?
At the end of Season 2, she thought that he had something for her and she knew that she had something for him, and she thought that maybe he was open to it, and she wanted to explore that … and then he showed up with his ex-wife [Gina, played by Monet Mazur]. I think that put her in a space where she didn’t think that he had that same kind of feeling towards her.

Ask Ausiello - 9/20/11
Ausiello: As if his issues with Beckett weren’t enough to keep him up at night, Castle is going to have his hands full with another woman in his life this season: daughter Alexis. “She’s testing the limits — and where we take her in the next couple of episodes allows her to push the limits even more,” previews series creator Andrew W. Marlowe. “It was always my intent to have Alexis be a good girl and not do anything crazy — we don’t expect her to become a drug addict — but we do get to see that [father/daughter friction] and other issues that she’s wrestling with. She’s at an age where girls struggle with their identity and with relationships, so we have all of that material to play with.”
Question: Any Castle scoop? As much as I love Beckett and Castle, I’d love some news on anything relating to Ryan and Esposito. —Mere
Ausiello: “This season there is going to be a ‘boys night’ episode, either [Episode] 7 or 8,” reveals Jon Huertas (aka Esposito). “Castle and Esposito probably want to show Ryan a good time before he gets ‘locked up’ [in marriage]!” So, where might the guys go for their manly merriment? “Atlantic City isn’t that far from New York,” Huertas ventures, “so I imagine we’d try to go there and see how dirty we can get.”

Marlowe on the season 4 premiere: 'I'd say they are in a relationship'
At some point between “nearly dead” and “miraculously saved,” Beckett told Castle (Nathan Fillion) that she didn’t remember anything about the shooting. That means she didn’t even recall his “I love you” at the end of last season. Wah-wah. (Oh, and she was totally lying.)
So, by the end of the premiere, here’s what we knew: Castle loves her, Beckett loves him, and they can’t do anything about it because she’s not ready and he knows she won’t be ready until she does more digging into the ultra-dangerous case of her mother’s murder. And where does that leave our favorite couple — and the viewers? EW rang up executive producer Andrew Marlowe a few days ago to chat about the premiere and find out what’s to come for this conflicted couple.
In sum? This is only the beginning…

ADAM: Not according to Stana Katic. "Beckett is relentless," she says, insisting that Beckett's brush with death will only fuel her fire. "[If] Beckett sees a challenge, http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifshe's going to run at it head on. If there's a wall in her way, she's going to break it down. Castle and Beckett's New Secrets Are a "Ticking Bomb"
With those words, spoken by Detective Kate Beckett in the closing moments of Castle's Season 4 premiere, the show kicked off what is sure to be a rollercoaster season of secrets.
After narrowly surviving the gunshot she suffered in the Season 3 finale, Beckett (Stana Katic) tells Castle (Nathan Fillion) that she doesn't remember anything from the day she was shot — including the fact that Castle told Beckett he loved her. But in the premiere's final moments, Beckett confesses to her police-mandated shrink (Michael Dorn) that she she's been lying about her faulty memory.
But why? "She's scared to admit that she heard him because she's scared that the relationship is going to go to the next level and it could potentially ruin their friendship," creator and executive producer Andrew W. Marlowe tells TVGuide.com. "She wants it but she's not ready for it."

Premiere in Review
Just as ABC’s Castle ended its Season 3 finale with its titular novelist (played by Nathan Fillion) professing, “I love you” to Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), the Season 4 premiere closed out with a game-changing three-word confession of its own.
“I remember everything.”
Yep, after claiming to Castle that she had no recollection of her shooting, let alone what happened or was said to her in the moments immediately afterward, Kate revealed to her psychiatrist (Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Michael Dorn) that she had been lying, and thus knows full well how Rick feels about her.
So why the cover-up? Why push Castle away for several months after the incident? During our visit to the Castle set, TVLine invited series creator Andrew W. Marlowe to answer those burning questions, and others.
TVLINE | Why did Beckett lie to Castle about remembering?
Being the kind of person she is, I think she’s not ready to deal with the emotional consequences of accepting what she heard. She has very strong feelings for Castle, which she recognizes but is concerned about acting on because she’s concerned about what it will do to their relationship. She’s also concerned that she’s at a point where she’s really fragile. She wants a real relationship, she doesn’t want to be a “conquest,” just another one of the many women he’s been with. She feels like he’s important in her life, and that she should be important in his — and she doesn’t trust that yet.

Stana Talks Season 4, Including Some Spoilers about Demons
Season 4 picks up with Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) clinging to life after her cliffhanger shooting, and though we won't say exactly what happens to her character, Zap2it did recently speak with the actress on the show's set. (Read into that what you will, spoiler-phobes.)
So what did Katic think of her character's near-death experience? "I loved it," she says. "I thought by reaching for higher stakes, by reaching for deeper truths, we were challenging the show to become an even bigger and better version of itself... I thought it was a great way to go."
With Kate juggling even more baggage than before, and still on the hunt for her mother's killer, it's also clear to Katic what it will take for her and Castle (Nathan Fillion) to finally get together.
"Beckett's always known that she's been in love with him," Katic says of the series' big will-they/won't-they relationship. "I think she is going to become extremely aware of the fact that until she is able to lay this burden, this baggage, to rest, she's not going to be able to fairly engage in any relationship... That's her biggest secret, I think, this year. Before she dives in with him, she has to close that chapter and make sure she's whole and available to a real relationship."

Marlowe Talks Season 4, the Castle-Beckett Relationship and More...
The start of the fourth season marks a new chapter for Castle. Not only did Captain Montgomery's (Ruben Santiago-Hudson) surprising death cause a stir, but Beckett's (Stana Katic) shooting at the funeral raised questions about the future of the police detective. Castle's (Nathan Fillion) admission of love at the end only made the wait that much more unbearable. But as Castle creator Andrew Marlowe sees it, Castle's confession couldn't have been done two seasons ago.
"All the characters, in their own way, have been growing up," Marlowe told The Hollywood Reporter. "We see Castle's growth over the last couple of years, where he's still charming and lovable but he's more grown up for Beckett."
But will Beckett survive the gunshot? (Verdict: Most likely.) And with a new captain, nicknamed "Iron Gates," overseeing the precinct, is Castle and the crew in over their heads? Marlowe addresses all of these questions -- and revisits the emotional third season closer.

How Will Victoria Gates Affect Castle & Beckett's Relationship?
As audiences need not be reminded, last season’s CASTLE finale left us all in shock, not to mention a bit tear soaked over the death of beloved Captain Roy Montgomery and the shooting of Kate Beckett at his funeral. With Richard Castle’s “I love you” being perhaps the final words Beckett heard, tonight’s third season picks-up to find out if Beckett survives and whether or not she heard Castle’s confession. Then joining in the ranks to take over the precinct is Penny Johnson Jerald as Captain Victoria Gates, who has no preexisting relationship with any of them and who has a decidedly different view on whether Richard Castle, as a writer, should be allowed to shadow a lead detective into harm’s way on a regular basis.
While attending this summer’s Television Critics Association in Los Angeles, CASTLE’s newest cast member Penny Johnson Jerald spoke with press about her controversial new role as Captain Victoria Gates and replacing Ruben Santiago-Hudson as the popular Captain Roy Montgomery.
Who will you be playing on CASTLE this season?
I play Captain Victoria Gates, aka “Sir Iron Gates.” You don’t call me “ma’am” you call me “sir.” And “iron” is because she is by-the-book and nothing will get past her. So I find that extraordinary.
Had you watched the show before being cast as Captain Victoria Gates?
I watched the final 2 episodes of Season 3 prior to meeting the producers because it is just smart to know what you’re in for. But after I got into it, I actually asked for every episode because if I’m coming onto the set there’s a different rhythm to the show, different people; the show itself, the style of the show is different. So I’ve been watching every episode since the pilot to see how things change — especially hair!

What Happens After "I Love You"?
That's the question looming over Castle, as the Season 4 premiere (Monday, 10/c, ABC) focuses heavily on how Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) will react to a profession of love from her mystery-writer/partner, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), in last season's finale. Of course, Castle's "I love you" didn't come over a candlelight dinner, but in the aftermath of Beckett being gunned down by a sniper. So, there are plenty of easy outs, right?
"My goals were to honor everything that we had done in the season finale and not sweep anything under the carpet," creator and executive producer Andrew W. Marlowe tells TVGuide.com. "My intent was to confront all the issues that we brought up and deal with them in a way that ... was going to be both satisfying to fans and also a little bit frustrating for the ones who want Castle and Beckett to get back right away. We've taken their relationship to the next level of complexity. There's a lot more meaning in the Beckett and Castle relationship."
Adds executive producer Laurie Zaks: "Once the genie is let out of the bottle, it can't be put back in. Even if it's not acknowledged verbally, psychologically there's going to be a difference."

TVLine's Interview w/Nathan Fillion: 'I Want Castle To Have a Drunken, Romantic Evening With Beckett, and Then…'
Speaking with TVLine on the set of ABC’s Castle, Nathan Fillion says that is what was racing through his character’s mind at the close of last May’s finale, the instant he realized Beckett was about to be felled by a sniper’s bullet.
The shocking shooting not only spilled blood, it also prompted Castle to spill his feelings for his partner in crime-solving, erasing any last shred of doubt about where the playboy novelist stands.
“There’s a lot between these people that has yet remained unsaid, so it was a very visceral kind of thing,” Fillion says. “He finds himself overcome and confesses his love, knowing that this very well may be his last chance to express himself like that, which he’s never done for her before.”

A Preview of Rise
With the gripping and dramatic season three cliffhanger, Castle is going to need time and effort to return to the breezy, charming mystery that fans have come to love. That said, with the fan reactions to the season three finale it’s clear they are ready to follow the series through the drama.
Season four picks up where season three ended and despite the fact that we know that Beckett (Stana Katic) is going to survive having been shot in the chest during Captain Montgomery’s (Ruben Santiago Hudson) funeral, the opening moments of Castle season four are gripping and dramatic.
As for Castle (Nathan Fillion), he blames himself for getting Beckett to reopen her investigation of her mother’s murder. The guilt leads Castle to continue investigating the murder while Beckett recovers away from the precinct and away from Castle.
Time passes, Beckett returns to active duty to find the precinct different from when she left. The investigation of her shooting and all related investigations have been stopped by the new captain, Victoria ‘Iron’ Gates (Penny Johnson). The new Captain also put an end to Castle, kicking him out of the precinct.
To get the evidence she wants to keep her investigating her case Beckett is forced to seek out Castle who may have a new lead. Where this storyline goes from there I will leave you to discover. I will tell you that I enjoyed the way the writers have set this story line up for the season. There is a complex game that Castle will be forced to play to keep Beckett safe.

Nathan Talks Season 4, Including Casting His Dad and More
Going into the fourth season of 'Castle' (premieres Mon., Sept. 19, 10PM ET on ABC), he's still so invested in the Castle-Beckett relationship, the storylines, the ideas for where to go next, even the guest stars. He loves 'Castle' as much as the fans do, and it shows.
I caught up with Fillion to talk all about the jaw-dropping Season 4 premiere -- after last season's shooting and the big "I love you" cliffhanger, we certainly find our favorite will they-won't they TV couple treading new ground.
Fillion dished about women, Castle's usual distraction when things get tricky with Beckett, but also the new boss ("She's so mean!") and maybe, possibly getting Castle officially deputized to do some real policing.
Then we talked about this season's 'Ghostbusters'-inspired Halloween episode, Fillion's dream scenario for Season 4 and his personal casting choice to play Castle's dad that got him all choked up just talking about it.

Marlowe Teases a Season of Explosive Secrets
Castle creator Andrew W. Marlowe admits it wasn’t easy putting a bullet into Detective Kate Beckett in the Season 3 finale. But what doesn’t kill the NYPD cop will only make the show stronger.
“It was a pretty tough decision to shoot her — and to have Captain Montgomery take that [fatal] bullet,” Marlowe told TVLine during our visit to the hit ABC drama’s set on Tuesday. “But we wanted to show growth, and that’s a challenge for any show when you’re working within a pretty good comfort zone.”
Elaborating on the matter of Montgomery (played by Ruben Santiago-Hudson) being revealed as complicit in the cover-up of Joanna Beckett’s years-ago murder, then dying a hero’s death, Marlowe acknowledges, “Anytime you make a decision like that, about a character everybody loves, it’s going to be controversial, but things had become very comfortable inside the precinct. It had become like a family, and everybody had accepted Castle (played by Nathan Fillion), so we were losing an element of conflict that would make the show even more special.”

TVLine Exclusive First Look: Castle's Official Key Art Points to a Season of Secret… Love Affairs?
To best answer that question, one first must determine what exactly is happening in the image below. Given where things left off in May — with Castle confessing his love to a near-dead Beckett — conventional wisdom suggests that she’s shushing him before he opens his mouth (and heart) any further. Of course, that assumes she even heard him in the first place.

The Latest on "Rise"
If I didn’t know that a very fun Halloween episode and a superhero-themed episode were coming up, I’d probably be thinking we were in for the darkest season yet based on the premiere. But since I do know those are on the way, I feel a little better saying perhaps the deep issues that will be dealt with will be scattered throughout the season as they have been in the past. That said, prepare for some not-necessarily-love-related issues to make your heart ache. Particularly one scene that shows a side of someone we’ve never seen before.
I don’t really have a question, just anything your “willing” to share that doesn’t “spoil” anything. — @BecaGreenfield
You’re going to get a lot for a non-question: The park scene everyone has been all excited about? It’s as deep and as good as we all imagined…but not for the reason you might be thinking.
When will we find out what Montgomery put in that envelope during the s3 finale and who he mailed it to? — @lkanoczzz
First episode. But it definitely opens up some more questions in the process.

Examiner: 'Castle' season four promises role reversals, as well as a regime change
But we all know she's going to survive. So the stakes seem a bit false at the start...
And that’s just the thing: Castle played up the drama around Beckett’s shooting. To have it be “just a flesh wound” would have been unrealistic but to try to convince the audience she might not make it out alive? She’s one of the stars of the show; we all know she’ll be okay. It’s just a matter of when she returns to her feet-- and her job. And in the case of season four, that when is sooner, rather than later, in the premiere episode entitled “Rise.”

The good news for you?
I answered some burning fan questions about the hour, so hopefully that will make the wait a little less painful and it will give you all some things to ponder while you wait for “Rise.”
Take a look…
What will the die-hard fans who did *not* like the finale (too dark, contrived, etc.) be able to enjoy about the premiere? - @TweetieSweetie4 via Twitter
I actually adored the finale, so I can’t speak with complete authority on what people who didn’t like the hour will enjoy about the premiere.
However, with that being said, I think there is a good, realistic balance for this episode. If you’re looking for humor, there is quite a bit in the episode, mostly at the most unexpected times. What happened in the finale isn’t dismissed and swept under a rug, but things are depressingly sad the entire hour, either. But as a warning, while there is a stand-alone case of the week, there is no doubt that most of the personal arcs in the season premiere are a continuation of the events that occurred in the finale.

NiceGirlsTV: An Advance Review of the Season 4 Premiere
ABC has certain restrictions about what can be revealed, so forgive me if this review is vague, but believe me when I say you don’t want to be spoiled when it comes to a few plot points. The episode picks up right after the finale with Beckett being rushed to the hospital. The action and emotion during those few minutes is intense. Still grieving for Montgomery, now Lanie, Esposito, Ryan and Castle are faced with losing Beckett. Emotions are running high and reveal both love and anger between different characters, resulting in a very strong opening.
