Ask Ausiello: Season Premiere

Question: Do you have any info on when Season 4 of Castle is going to pick up? Like how much time will have passed between the finale and the premiere? —Emily

Ausiello: That depends. How long do you think it takes to get from that cemetery to the nearest hospital? I’m going to go with more than 10 minutes but less than 30.

Inside TV: What's next for Beckett and Castle?

I’m still not over it. And I know I should be. If I was a more stable person, I might even be able to watch the airport hangar scene without crying. But you know what? I’m not. Stable is overrated. Overrated like waiting four months for new Castle. So when I interrupted Andrew Marlowe’s Hawaiian vacation this week, I pressed for more about where Castle and Beckett might be headed. And from the sound of it? Next season is going to be just as good — if not better.

“I think [the finale] was a great way to chapter out on the early portion of the Beckett-Castle relationship and to transition us to an even more complex more mature aspect of their relationship as we move forward,” Marlowe said. “I think that even though Castle is still kind of a charming, boyish man, we see an enormous amount of growth in him over the last three years towards a kind of maturity. It doesn’t mean he’s going to lose his boyish charm. It just means that he’s becoming more complex and interesting. The same with Beckett, a character who started off being relatively closed off.”

Marlowe points to the scene in the finale where Montgomery tells Beckett that she “wasn’t having any fun” before Castle came along as an example of the kind of growth he likes to see from the pair. “We’ve really seen her start to open up to both Castle and to the audience, and there are more mysteries to mine in both of these characters, as there are in the secondary characters, but I think that this marks a new and different chapter in their relationship. We’re not looking to fundamentally change the show, we’re just looking to enhance it and make the experience even richer and more satisfying for the fans,” he said.

Andrew Marlowe on finale shooting: 'She was not wearing a vest.'

While Castle fans were weeping over Monday night’s season finale (Beckett! Nooooo!), creator Andrew Marlowe was in Hawaii, oblivious to the emotional turmoil he’d just inflicted upon us. To get back at him (kidding!), EW interrupted the executive producer’s much-deserved vacation (not kidding…) to ask some of our — and your — burning questions.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I know you’re sitting sea side right now, but have you seen any of the Internet reaction to the finale?
ANDREW MARLOWE: Yeah, I was on Twitter and a lot of the fans were nice enough to leave their thoughts with me on Twitter, so that was very exciting.

I’m not getting the sense that they’re as angry as you thought they might be.
[Laughs] Well, I didn’t know. I knew that I was going to give them something emotionally satisfying, but I also wanted them to be prepared going in that it was going to end on a cliffhanger. But I think that for the ‘shippers, there was some sense of relief that Castle got to say what he wanted to say and that in the argument they were able to put their cards on the table. Then when we get to the final scene, he’s able to admit his feelings for her. So I think there was some really good resolution in that while we had all the other stuff. I think if we didn’t have that resolution, people would have felt a little unsatisfied.

Castle Writer Terri Miller on Montgomery's Death, Beckett's Survival and Season 4 Plans

The Season 3 finale of Castle had fans gasping, crying and hanging on a cliff after the death of Captain Montgomery (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), the shooting of Det. Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), and Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) finally saying "I love you" as she lay bleeding in his arms.

So what's next? Castle writer/producer Terri Miller (who's also married to creator Andrew Marlowe) emailed us from an undisclosed vacation spot to answer questions from Wetpaint and our readers about the decision to kill off a beloved character, whether Beckett will live — and if she'll remember those three little words if she does.

Mega Buzz: A 'Castle' Return

Thanks for the great Castle postmortem. Any leftovers? — Kristen

ADAM:
A couple. First, Beckett's ability to put her faith in people may have died along with Captain Montgomery. "We're really interested in how this death will affect Beckett's ability to trust in the Castle-Beckett relationship moving forward," executive producer Andrew W. Marlowe says. Secondly, you can definitely expect to see the 3XK killer again next season, and his target will be Detective Ryan. "We're going to be dealing with the aftermath of Ryan having lost his gun and badge [to 3XK]" Marlowe says. "He has to come face to face with what happened that night."

Ask Ausiello: Was Beckett Really Shot?

Question: My gut is telling me that Beckett’s “shooting” in the Castle finale was staged — all part of an elaborate scheme to send her underground and shield her from the killer. Am I hot or cold? —Jeff

Ausiello:
You’re freezing. Beckett was shot. This is no time for denial. Snap out of it!

Question: You better have a Castle Q&A coming up after that season finale. Please? —@jenkburns via Twitter

Ausiello:
Sorry, no Q&A. I welcome you to join me in a fun game of connect the dots though! Weeeeee
Dot No. 1: Beckett was shot near the heart.
Dot No. 2: Beckett’s lovah, Josh, is a cardiac surgeon.
Dot. No. 3: In an interview with TVGuide.com, the show’s EP, Andrew Marlowe, all but confirmed that Victor Webster would be back next season. “He’s still out there, and he’s somebody we’re going to have to deal with,” Marlowe teased. “He’s an element moving forward and it’ll be interesting to see how that functions.”
Ready. Set. Connect!

TV Guide Exclusive Castle Postmortem: Creator on [SPOILER!]'s Death and Castle and Beckett's Future

Castle's third season went out with a bang. More than one, actually.

The action-packed final episode found Beckett (Stana Katic) once again drawn into investigating her mother's murder after Hal Lockwood (Max Martini), the hitman who has killed all her previous leads in the case, escapes from prison. Beckett soon learns that Lockwood's next target is none other than Captain Montgomery (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), who was the third cop involved in the kidnapping of a mob boss that ultimately led to Beckett's mother's murder.

Mongtomery's betrayal and cover-up is a hard pill for Beckett to swallow, but ultimately the Captain risks his own life to take down Lockwood and protect Beckett from further harm. One problem: Montgomery dies without revealing the real mystery man who sent Lockwood to kill the conspiring cops in the first place. And that mystery man seems to have hired a new gunman, as in the closing moments of the episode, Beckett is gunned down by a sniper and left bleeding out as Castle (Nathan Fillion) professes his love to her.

If you're anything like us, you're still in shock. And you have plenty of questions. (Of course Beckett is going to live, silly!) Luckily, we chatted with Castle creator Andrew W. Marlowe to break it all down. Below in our exclusive interview, Marlowe reveals why the Captain had to die, what the next layer of mythology in the Johanna Beckett case involves, and just how Castle's admission of love will play out next season.

GMMR: Andrew Marlowe Teases the Season Finale

The CASTLE season finale is here!

Beckett’s mother’s case is revisited in tonight’s hour and as CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe told Give Me My Remote earlier this year, when they tackle these serious cases, “Castle is at his finest and it allows Beckett to see him in a more mature light.”

So what will this mean for our favorite twosome? Marlowe was kind enough to answer a few of my questions about tonight’s Very Big Finale and drop a few teases about next season…

Fans were a little surprised about how direct Royce was about the Castle/Beckett relationship in his letter to Beckett. How will those words impact her actions in the finale?

Andrew Marlowe:
I think Royce’s words will certainly illuminate some of Beckett’s behavior in the finale. But their impact on Beckett will be more noticeable as we move forward next year.

Inside TV: More Castle Finale Scoop

I love, love the show Castle! But, was wondering if [they] went dark in the finale and if Castle’s father is the one behind Johanna Beckett’s death. I hope I am wrong! Love to the writers, crew and cast – Angie

Of course executive producer Andrew Marlowe can’t answer your question completely. But he did explain the “dark” finale. “It was less of a decision to go dark and more of a decision to deal with Beckett’s mother’s murder, which of course makes her emotionally raw and means we have to take everything about the case very seriously. It always challenges the Beckett/Castle relationship in terms of drawing them together or pushing them apart.” And we all know those are the best ones! By the way, has anyone recovered from the awesomeness of that L.A. episode yet? Yeah, me neither. I was inconsolable.

Will the cliffhanger in the Castle finale center around the advancement (or lack thereof) of Castle and Beckett’s romantic relationship, as it did last season, or will it be more of a “life or death” cliffhanger considering there will be gunfire ringing out in the last few seconds? — Stephanie

May I share a conversation?

Me: So are we gonna be left on a cliffhanger for this season?

Marlowe: Yes, we will.

Me: And is it gonna be a relationship one or a case-related one?

Marlowe: Both.

Does that double your anticipation, Steph?

Mega Buzz: Will Something Happen Between Castle and Beckett?

Castle is killing me with all the Beckett-Castle teasing. Something has to happen between them in the finale, right? — Erica

ADAM:
Something huge is going to happen. "Both characters lay their cards on their table," creator Andrew W. Marlowe tells us. "[They] come to an understanding about the issues that they're dealing with, the ways in which each of them were approaching the relationship." The catch? The powwow is necessitated by Beckett's obsession with her mother's case and the end result isn't very romantic. "At the end of the day she cares too much about this case to care about being protected," Marlowe says. "[She's] pretty much pushing everybody away."

Andrew Marlowe Teases To Love and Die in LA & Knockout

If you’ve been excited about tonight’s episode of Castle ever since you heard Castle and Beckett were going to be sharing a hotel room, join the club. And while the next two episodes are full of the hilariousness you love about Castle, I warn you: Enjoy it while you can. Because the finale, readers, is everything you hate to love about Castle. It’s dark, twisty, and sure to leave impatiently wanting more for the next four months or so.

I chatted with executive producer Andrew Marlowe last week, who gave me more info on the next few episodes of Castle, including the finale, which, he says, will set them up for a Lost-sized change in season 3. (“We’re starting next season by moving the island.”)

Assignment X Interview: Stana Katic Storms Castle

On ABC’s Monday 10 PM hit CASTLE, now wrapping its third season and renewed for a fourth, Stana Katic’s NYPD detective has an affectionate if often adversarial relationship with Nathan Fillion’s writer Richard Castle.

On screen, Castle uses the no-nonsense Beckett as the model for his new literary heroine Nikki Heat. In person, Canada-born actress Katic (QUANTUM OF SOLACE, THE LIBRARIAN: THE CURSE OF THE JUDAS CHALICE, THE SPIRIT) comes off as being a bit softer and more cheerful than Beckett. The actress is no less busy than her character, though, so she can’t talk for long, but here’s what she has to say about being Beckett.
