3x22 - To Love and Die in L.A. - Another Sneak Peek

Seamus Dever Discusses Finale with Wetpaint

Wetpaint: What can you tell us about the finale?

Seamus Dever:
It's big. It's dark. I've been calling it our Empire Strikes Back episode because it's dark. I mean, The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite movie of all of them for that reason. It was realistic. There's not much hope that comes out of the season finale.

I think it's going to probably really excite a lot of people and they'll think, "Oh, what a great episode!" And other people are going to go, "No! No!" And they're probably going to be screaming at their television. [Laughs] It's going to have a reaction.

And I hope people like it because we really, really worked very hard on it. I've got the bruises and scrapes and blood to show for it. I really hope that the audience does respond to it, and that it propels them to come back with us in the fall.

3x22 - To Love and Die in L.A. - US Promo #2

There's only minor differences in this promo, about a second's worth, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

Inside TV: Your ‘Castle’ Questions Answered!

Any further scoop on the upcoming L.A. episode would be fun…. shared hotel suite…. sportscars… palm trees… bikinis that episode is already looking like it’s going to be a fan favorite! — Cheryl

I’d be willing to say it’ll be a fan-fave — especially if you enjoy rogue Beckett! “She’s not a cop in L.A. She’s not working under any authority, so she has to go a little rogue, which I think both delights Castle, but also makes him a little big nervous,” says Marlowe. “In New York, she’s always there as a safety net to make sure things go as planned. But in L.A., they’re flying blind.” But Marlowe is humbled when I tell him fans are building this one up. “Well, we hope we don’t disappoint. I don’t want to build it up too much,” he says, laughing. So modest!

I hope this is an appropriate question as I have never posted one before: I am wondering if Marlowe and/or fellow writers see all the storyline theories for the L.A. episode or season finale posted on sites like the ABC message boards? I read them and have to chuckle, wondering if the powers that be read them and laugh at how off base they are or be amazed at how correct they are. Thanks. — Rayna

There’s absolutely no right or wrong question to ask, Rayna! Fear not. But you should fear that information you’re writing online is getting back to Marlowe. He’s a busy guy, so he doesn’t always have time to read it himself. But trust me when I say, he hears it. And you know what? Some of the theories you’ve pondered about the finale are correct! “Certainly there are people out there who are flirting with various elements of what we’re doing who have gotten some things right,” he says.

Please give us some theories on the possible game changer for Castle and Beckett!!! Is someone he knows involved in Beckett’s mom’s murder? Beckett pregnant by Josh? I need something significant from the finale to get me through the summer! PLEASE!!!!! — Jade

Pregnant? I think not. And my game changer theory? Per Marlowe, “There’s a moment where the two of them talk about their feelings for each other and really get to express where they think they’re at in the relationship,” Marlowe says, making my heart flutter. “I think fans will be really interested to see how that information comes out.”

Any more teases about the end of Castle's season? — Greg

ADAM:
There may be yet another familiar face we see less of next year. But this one doesn't involve the Grim Reaper: Castle's daughter Alexis may be leaving the city. "[Her boyfriend] is going off to college — he's going to Stanford," creator Andrew W. Marlowe reveals. "So how is the long-distance relationship going to work? When we leave Episode 23, Alexis has vowed to go to college early, because she has the credits, so she can be with Ashley." Someone should tell the Grim Reaper Castle might have a special job for him.

Inside TV: Think You've Heard All There is to Hear About the Finale? Think Again!

Whilst grilling executive producer Andrew Marlowe about the episode via email, the king of teases had this to say: “Part of the drama of how we’re ending the season hopefully will be all the speculation of how it will affect all our characters next season, especially Beckett and Castle now that, after the finale, so many more of their emotional cards will be on the table.”

Considering the show’s track record for making the stone in my chest ache, this might be completely amazing.

Mega Buzz: Who killed Johanna Beckett?

Will we learn who killed Joanna Beckett in the Castle finale? — Liza

ADAM:
No, but you'll get another big clue, which will put someone very close to Beckett under suspicion. Meanwhile, while we've been focusing on this rumored death, we should have also been telling you about the gunshots that ring out in the episode's final moments.

Ask Ausiello: Various Castle Spoilers

Question: I know you have already given us a lot of tidbits about the upcoming Castle episodes, but we are still dying (no pun intended) for more! Any other items you can share about the upcoming L.A. episode with Castle/Beckett sharing a hotel room, or the explosive season finale? —Cheryl

Ausiello:
How about some scoop on the episode sandwiched between those two? “Because the finale is serious and the L.A. episode is very much off-pattern for us, we had a lot of fun with the [penultimate] episode,” explains series creator Andrew W. Marlowe. “It’s about a death at a beauty pageant. We have Michael McKean (Smallville) playing a New York real estate multi-millionaire who runs the beauty pageant. Teri Polo (Meet the Parents) is in it as well. It’s just a fun Castle episode, but it also touches on the Castle-Beckett relationship, and also the Alexis/Ashley relationship, because Ashley is going off to college and that presents a complication for Alexis.”

Question: Any more scoop on the big obstacle coming up for Castle and Beckett in the Castle finale? —Andy

Ausiello:
Something happens that “puts their identities fundamentally at odds,” hints Marlowe.

Question: Can you deny or confirm that the death on Castle will stick? Because I smell a fake-out. —Bree

Ausiello:
You might want to investigate that smell because the death will stick. (What did you have for lunch today? That’s always a good place to start.)

Question: What’s up with the 3XK killer storyline on Castle? Are you ever gonna hear about that again? —Brittany

Ausiello:
Yes, but not until next season.

Inside TV: Expect a Major Game-Changer

Being an avid Castle fan, I am dying for more news about the finale — I know Andrew Marlowe has said Castle and Beckett will not be getting together this season (and probably not next season) but PLEASE, PLEASE tell me he won’t end the season with the one or both of them going off with someone else. I think the writers do a fantastic job playing “cat and mouse” but to me that would make everything that has happened in the back half of season three a complete charade and I would feel cheated. Appreciate any and all scoop — G

I think Marlowe and Co. know what their bread and butter is. That much I can say. As far as the finale, if I were you, I’d be expecting a major game-changer.

Along the way, they visit the set of the "Heat Wave" movie (based on Castle's book) and enlist the cast to help break the case. Castle Boss to Bones Producers: Booth and Brennan Need to Hook Up NOW

As creator and exec producer of ABC’s Castle, Andrew W. Marlowe has spent a whole lot of the last three years keeping his title character and Beckett apart, and wondering how long that can go on. One thing he does know: He’d be getting pretty anxious right about now if he were Bones‘ Hart Hanson and the couple in question was Booth and Brennan.

Bones is heading into its seventh year,” Marlowe observes to TVLine, “and there comes a point where you put up or shut up. Otherwise, the characters become brother and sister. You can’t extend that tension that long without your fans breaking. And I know that people still watch the show and it’s still popular… I just think it [starts to] morph into something else.”

Exclusive: Castle Boss on 'Explosive' Finale and a Major 'Crisis' For Castle and Beckett!

OK, here’s the deal: I want to tell you that the May 16 season finale of ABC’s Castle is going to be mind-blowing. I’d like to say that it’s going to be epic, that it’s going to further along the investigation into the murder of Beckett’s mother (and in a big way), and that it’s even going to further along the relationship between the detective and our title author (though not necessarily for the better). But instead, I’ll let executive producer Andrew W. Marlowe tell you. Cool? Cool.

TVLINE | How much of the finale is about Castle and Beckett’s relationship?
Andrew: It’s essential in the finale.

TVLINE | I feel like there’s nothing standing in the way of them getting together at this point. I was watching the scene at the end of Monday’s episode thinking, “And Castle isn’t making a move here because…?”
Andrew: It’s very challenging. And it’s something I need to address for next season. I don’t think the audience is ready for [a Castle/Beckett romance] yet, even though the ‘shippers are crying out for it. I feel like it isn’t quite time for them to get together as a couple. But I do recognize that they have to move to a different level in their relationship and there has to be a significant obstacle to them getting together. So for me it’s how I do that in an honest way.

Ask Ausiello: To Love and Die in LA Spoilers

Question: I’m dying for more information on Castle and Beckett sharing the same hotel room in Castle‘s upcoming L.A. episode.

It’s not as contrived as it sounds. There’s actually a very plausible explanation for the slumber party. “Beckett booked a hotel on a cop’s salary that’s located all the way out in the valley,” explains exec producer Andrew W. Marlowe, “and Castle has a two-bedroom suite at a high-end hotel in Beverly Hills.” Um, duh. The Valley vs. 90210? Take it from an L.A. sorta-native — it’s a no-brainer. Anyway, one thing leads to another which, in turn, leads to… sex? “She certainly thinks about it, and considers it,” teases Marlowe. “She’s emotionally raw because they’ve come out to Los Angeles in the aftermath of the murder of her training officer, so she’s dealing with those emotions and kind of where she is in life. We call it our ‘Walls of Jericho’ moment for any [viewers] out there who are fans of It Happened One Night.” (Someone please CliffsNotes that last sentence for me in the comments; I cover TV, not movies.)

Andrew W. Marlowe Tears Down Cop Show Walls

The executive producer talks characters, Nathan Fillion, inspiration and more.

ASSIGNMENT X: What was the genesis of CASTLE?

ANDREW W. MARLOWE: Well, I was primarily a feature writer [AIR FORCE ONE, END OF DAYS, HOLLOW MAN], and I was stuck in my ten-by-ten room, and I thought, wouldn’t it be great to get out of the room and actually do some of the things I was writing about? Just translating that notion to CASTLE seemed relatively friendly. What is it like to have a writer who has all this book information actually have to go out into the real world? There is also a part of me where I love the old murder mysteries.

The recent procedurals like CSI and LAW & ORDER are a little too dry for me, because it doesn’t really focus on the character, it focuses on the minutia of the law or the minutia of the evidence that I like to call “evidence porn,” because they show it in beautiful light to the music montage. What I was missing were the characters that I loved growing up on the shows like ROCKFORD and COLUMBO, MOONLIGHTING, all those great mysteries.

So between me wanting to get out in the world and do stuff and projecting that onto Castle and wanting to be part of a show that had great characters that felt like the shows that I loved growing up, I just came up with this idea. And of course, when you’re trying to do a relationship show, you want as much friction as possible between the main characters. You really do want the sparks to fly on both sides. So I thought, “Okay, well, if I was being followed around by somebody all day who thought that they knew better than me, I would be really annoyed.” And that was the genesis of the Beckett/Castle relationship. And it’s just been wonderful to see Nathan and Stana really bring it to life. They play it to the hilt.

EW Exclusive: First look at L.A. episode, with guest star Gene Simmons

We’ve been hearing about Castle‘s Los Angeles excursion, but now comes the first look at the episode airing May 2. In the episode, called “To Love and Die in L.A.,” Beckett (Stana Katic) goes rogue and follows a suspect in the shooting death of her former partner to Los Angeles against orders. Castle (Nathan Fillion) tags along, and they end up visiting the set of the Heat Wave movie and enlist the cast to help break the case. Sadly, Laura Prepon won’t recur as the actress playing Nikki Heat, the heroine of Castle‘s crime novels inspired by Beckett. But we will get to meet the two actors playing the fictionalized versions of Esposito and Ryan. (That’s some solid casting with Justice Gamble and Ryan Deal, respectively).

Rock star Gene Simmons pops up as himself and the owner of the Beverly Hills mansion where the victim was living — we’ve got your first look at his guest spot above. Other guest stars include Prison Break‘s Dominic Purcell as a local businessman who may have a connection to the murder, The Cutting Edge‘s D.B. Sweeney as a detective in Robbery Homicide who questions Castle and Beckett about their rogue investigation, and Off the Map‘s Jason George as an entrepreneur with a connection to the murder case. I’m guessing we’re supposed to be most intrigued by this line in ABC’s episode description, “As they get closer to apprehending their killer, Castle begins to wonder whether Beckett is out for justice…or revenge,” but really, I’m most excited to see faux Esposito and Ryan. You?

EW Exclusive: 'Heat Rises' Plot synopsis of Richard Castle's third Nikki Heat novel revealed

The third book in Richard Castle’s Nikki Heat series hits shelves (for real) in September, and EW has obtained a plot description from Hyperion, which has already published two New York Times best-sellers from the crime novelist Nathan Fillion plays on ABC’s Castle, Heat Wave and Naked Heat.

The bizarre murder of a parish priest at a New York bondage club is just the tip of an iceberg that leads Nikki Heat to a dark conspiracy that reaches all the way to the highest level of the NYPD. But when she gets too close to the truth, Nikki finds herself disgraced, stripped of her badge, and out on her own as a target for killers with nobody she can trust. Except maybe the one man in her life who’s not a cop. Reporter Jameson Rook.

In the midst of New York’s coldest winter in a hundred years, there’s one thing Nikki is determined to prove. Heat Rises.

Sounds like Castle did some research during episode 216, “The Mistress Always Spanks Twice.”

TVLine 'Castle' Scoop: The Grim Reaper's Paying a Visit

I’ve got some good news and some bad news, Castle fans. The bad is that the season finale will also be one character’s finale! The good? Well, um, I’m sure it’ll be exciting.

Obviously, I’m sworn to secrecy as to the identity of the soon-to-be dearly departed. But I can tell you that it’s someone who’s been with the series since the beginning. And the show is pulling out the big guns, figuratively speaking, for this swan song: As I reported in Ask Ausiello, Will Beall, who also wrote this season’s knockout “Knockdown” episode, will be the hour’s author.

Susan Sullivan Teases 'Castle' Season Finale

Susan Sullivan: Oh yes, there’s going to be a big surprise at the end of this season. No, seriously, there is. The actors were all surprised when we heard about it. I couldn’t even begin to give you a hint because it would ruin it. Every once in a while they do something that’s — I don’t know how they’re going to do it. But I do know that it’s going to involve love and loss.

TV Guide 'Castle' Exclusive First Look: Castle Uses His Poker Game for... Revenge?

Castle Tip No. 37: Never steal another writer's muse.

That's a lesson Lie to Me star Brendan Hines will learn the hard way when he guest-stars on the ABC drama as Alex Gordon, a young crime novelist and the protégé of Richard Castle (Nathan FIllion). Rather than shadow Castle for tips on incorporating real police work into his books, Alex would much rather pick the brain of Detective Beckett (Stana Katic).

Cue Castle's awkward jealous face.

But Tricky Rick isn't going down without a fight. Instead, as you can see in this exclusive first-look video from "The Dead Pool," which airs April 11, Castle invites young Alex to play poker with fellow mystery writers Michael Connelly and Dennis Lehane. And as we previously teased, the veterans make quick work of the rookie's ego. (Bonus: The clip also features a tribute to Stephen J. Cannell, the prolific TV producer and novelist who was a regular at Castle's games before he died last year.)

Castle airs Mondays at 10/9c on ABC.

TVLine 'Castle' Scoop: Gene Simmons Ready to Rock

Castle is about to get rocked by legendary KISS frontman Gene Simmons.

TVLine has exclusively learned that Simmons will appear as his badass self in Castle‘s Los Angeles-set murder-mystery episode, set to air in early May.

Per an ABC insider, Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) follow a lead straight to their victim’s Beverly Hills home, which just so happens to be owned by the rock superstar. Turns out, said victim had been living in the pad’s guest house prior to the incident. After a quick chat with Simmons in his fictional Beverly Hills backyard, the crimefighting pair sets off to continue their trek through La-La Land.
